I can decode it but wondering why some of these engines did not have a vin. Does that mean it was sold over the counter by the dealer, possibly as a replacement engine?

i f the block has been decked the vin will be gone. whats the castin gnumber...taht will give you some info on it

If the block was decked both codes would be missing but only the VIN is missing; the mfg code is still there. It says it is a 1968 Flint engine, M/t, 220 hp 4-barrel for a C10 mfg. on June 29th. Still wondering why the vin is missing from the block deck.

GM did not stamp VINs on truck engines until at least 1973. Car engines got VINs stamped starting much earlier (late '60s?).

So what you are saying is that a "numbers matching" truck in '67-'72 will be only the frame and cab...it will not have a VIN on the engine block?

Yes. You can never be 100% sure if the engine goes with the truck. You can be 99.99% sure if it looks original, has a correct block ID #, and correct casting date codes.
