piso gets a new engine!

I'm getting a long overdue engine swap. 2 months ago I got a Goodwrench 350 from Scoggin Dickey. Pulled the old one a month ago. I've sanded and painted everything I can unbolt, unscrew, or reach. I've had the usual snags and parts runs. Here's a few in progress pictures. Should be done in a couple weeks.

Here comes the magic

How beautiful

How hideous

Beauty & the Beast

before cleanup

after

Eddie powered! This is my buddy, gotta have one of these!

About time!

I'm just really disappointed I couldn't use my old exhaust manifolds

Almost there! If anyone wants to send me a nicer air cleaner I'll gladly use it.

My apologies to dial up users!

Wasn't the most fun thing in the world. Most of the wrapped wires I just painted over, then removed the wrap and redid them. Hoses were either taped or blocked off. It was a major PITA along the firewall.

Greg, Looks good man! Glad to see her back on the way to being driven again. As you know I have always loved your truck.

BTW, you can typically wrap stuff you don't want painted under the hood with aluminum foil. It countours to everything really well.

Thanks for the kind words Chris! Never thought of foil, awesome tip.

The headers are looking like trouble, not only do they not meet up with my current exhaust, they dump into the frame. Going to the muffler shop Monday, hopefully they can work some magic.

Is a crate engine cheaper than a complete overhaul or higher? Do not need one now but never know down the road. I guess you get one of these from a Chevy dealer? I just know parts are high at a dealer. Hope you get the headers taken care of. Good luck!

86swb, the crate engine should come with a warranty, Yes you get them at a Chevy dealer, and Scoggin Dickey (www.sdpc2000.com) in Lubbock Texas is a large dealer.... they have like a 300,000 square foot warehouse and deal in alot of high performance aftermarket parts for chevy and ford.. WHen my father worked there, he use to unload a couple semis of the GM goodwrench 350s a week...the one you probably want is # 10067353. It is one of the more popular engines.

Looks like a TBI or vortec motor, I assume TBI since this is an 87? Are you going with roller cam+ lifters or staying flat tappet?

Prerunner1982, thanks for the tip. Hope I do not need one for some time. That is a lot of engines. I will have to keep that in mine. #10067353.

I just went with the straight replacement TBI 350 long block. The prices I found around town were $2000-2200. Scoggin Dickey was $1700 (now $1600) and $150 for freight. Even after freight and losing the core exchange ($100) I still saved money. I don't have the part number immediately available.

It's been relatively painless. I keep finding nickel and dime stuff that needs to be replaced and other stuff I just want to. One of my engine mounts was cracked in half. Lower rad. hose was rotten. Replaced the battery cables. Just a lot of odds and ends. Hit a snag with the exhaust which will push it back some more.

Looks great Greg, keep us posted on how it goes and let us know how she runs!

BTW - I put a different fuel cell cap on my tank...it is much better than the plastic one that originally came on the cell. I needed to do some easy mods to make it fit and work, but I strongly suggest this mod to you or anyone else who is running the fuel cell with the plastic twist cap. If you want more info, just PM me. Here is the link...

That's beautiful, EXACTLY what I need! Where did you get the parts and how much? I can't go for the flap door right now since I still use the truck for work, but the gas lid replacement is ideal.
On that note, if anyone is going to use the plastic boat deck plate for fuel cell access like I did, be sure not to get epoxy on it. Or, if you do, like I did, be sure to have a hammer and chisel/screwdriver handy, like I did, to get to the fuel cell.

Its a JAZ Products Fast Fill assembly. You also need the split nut ring assembly. I purchased mine locally and paid under $100 for both. Here is some info from Jegs.com...

547-391-250-03
Straight Fast Fill Valve with Twist Lock Gas Cap

Designed to replace a standard 12-bolt D-ring cap assembly. The cast aluminum housing features a spring loaded flapper valve for roll over protection plus a twist-lock gas cap. Use Split Nut Bolt Ring p/n 547-315-030-03, sold separately.

In order to mount this into your Summit 6 bolt fuel cell, you need to remove your cap assembly, widen the opening by 1/8 inch or so, and drill new holes for the JAZ assembly. It would be easier to empty and remove your tank, and do your trimming and drilling that way...so you don't get anything else in your gas tank you don't want to. Since the JAZ assembly has that fast fill feature (for racing safety mostly), I sawed it all off since I wasn't sure how it would affect filling up at the pumps..and because I was uncertain if it would reduce my fuel cel capacity...16 gallons really isn't very much. LOL.

JAZ also makes 4" long, non Fast Fill filler assemblies. I am pretty sure 4" is too tall, but you could cut it, shorten it, and have it re-welded if it is. In case you are wondering, your under bed cross sills are 3" thick...depending on how your cell is mounted, and what kind of door you are using, the 4 incher may work. Here is a link to them...

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...19&prmenbr=361

Hope this helps some, and doesn't confuse ya.

You all need to roll down and check it out, stay a few days.

Have a 9ft inground pool out back and lots of yard to play games in. Gonna have a pool party this summer for sure!
