late model engine swap....

I know this has been discussed before, but... I'm thinking of swaping in a Vortec 350 from a 96-99 truck complete with auto trans, comp, wiring, and...into my '72.

Are there any major hurdles I need to be aware before I start down the path? I did the I6 to BB swap a few years back, so the "normal" issues with the swap are no problem, just looking for the big ones. And if anyone has pics from this swap, I'd love to see them.

Vortecs don't use a mechanical fuel pump so an electric one will have to be installed.

This was covered in last month's issue of Classic Truck Magazine. I ahve a copy and scanned it off for other board members. Because there are so many electronics on the new Vortec engines, you'll need to have someone reprogram all of the equipment. Trying to find someone to do this sounds like a chore.

That's a big decision you've chosen to make!

I PM'd you for a copy of that article...please.

I know this won't be "easy" but the idea of a daily driver that starts when cold/hot/whatever every time, get's double digit GM, has OD for highway use, etc is too tempting. Besides I have a line on a '69 camaro that could really use my BB .

You might consider one of the newer vortec motors like the '99+. They are LS1 based motors and perform much more effeciently and are simple to reprogram. Do a search for LS1/T56 for more info.

I have a 69 Burb that I'm putting a 05 5.3/ 4L60E tranny in and would appreciate any information/pictures. What harness did you use? Who remapped your computer? Were there any clearance issues? What radiator did you use? Do you have the hose part numbers? Wha engine/transmission mounts did you use? What gas tank? Did you use and in tank or inline fuel pump? Are you using factory gauges, if so were there any connection problems? Did you use one piece or two piece drive shaft?


AC102NV,

I picked up an 2005 5.3/4L60E with 10 miles on it. I came with all acessories, mass air flow, 02 sensors, fuel pump module and electric gas pedal for $3350 delivered! I got the motor from Schram Auto parts:

Hart_Rob....now you're trying to make me feel bad. That looks like a screaming deal on the engine!! With 10 miles it must have fallen off the transport Keep us posted as to the progress. I want to do this, but I'm not 100% commited...yet.

FirstGen...looks great! I would also be interested in the answers to the questions above, most importantly mounting/headers/guages.

Sounds like you are off to a great start. Please do a search for LS1 and look for any threads I've posted on. I've covered these issues many times. The starter thread was one titled "LS1/T56".
But here is a quick run down, just note that there are many options I choose this route to best suit my needs.

EDIT: just noticed that it looks like the search is shut down. Maybe someone has it bookmarked...


What harness did you use? built a new one from scratch.
Who remapped your computer? I did using HP Tuners and LS1Edit and I built the harness around a F-body PCM so that I could do this.
Were there any clearance issues? Yes, depending on the exhaust you use and the oil pan. The truck oil pan is the best. I used modified vette manifolds origionally see the mentioned thread above for pictures.
What radiator did you use? a new '68 C10 radiator
Do you have the hose part numbers? 2000 silverado upper/lower rad hoses see dealer or ebay.
Wha engine/transmission mounts did you use? I made my own engine mounts similar to the ones S&P sells for the motor and made a custom tubular crossmember and teflon mount for the T56.
What gas tank? Summit 16gal with foam and GM 0-90ohm fuel sensor
Did you use and in tank or inline fuel pump? inline Aeromotive A1000 fuel pump and aeromotive regulator (950 hp capable)
Are you using factory gauges... Autometer guages. You will not be able to use a stock speedo since it is mechanical and you will have an electrical VSS output. You can buy a converter that will cost you the price of an autometer tach and electric speedo if you really want to.
Did you use one piece or two piece drive shaft? one piece, first one was aluminum and supposedly bulletproof. well it didn't last long with slicks, now I went to steel would have been much cheaper to do this first off.

I didn't get the engine off of Ebay, I was just watching the action. After it was over I called them and bought one. The vehicle it was in was damaged by the transporter. Can't wait to get started, I'm baggin next weekend. Hopefully the motor within a couple of months.

Hart rob,

alright i understand sorry about that.. thought that was the auction you won.
i think that would be a decent swap. if i had unlimited funds id be doing something like that also.. i know in canada if a GM vehicle gets damaged during transport they are given to the collage's for the students to learn on. must be different in the US.

I guess the transporter messed it up. I agree, crazy to scrap a new vehicle (although I'm not complaining). I'm sure GM will write it off or raise the price of the 06's!

And I wish I could score a new engine-tranny combo like that around here in GA. I mean, I wouldn't want the same one, but I'd love to find a place with scores like that.
