Running quiet muffler W/ Headers

I want to keep the headers that were already on my truck when I got it, but I also want some quiet (real quiet) mufflers. I know that performance would suffer with this combination, but would driveability also be hurt, or would the back pressure be so bad that it might somehow hurt the engine? Thanks for your input.

Maybe try a muffler from a newer truck, like one of the 6 litres? They are pretty quiet mufflers, and probally would not affect your performance much. Only issue with that idea is that you'd need to go with a single exhaust setup, as if I remember right, those mufflers are real big.

yea only draw back to newer stuff is that they restrict flow go buy some cheap mufflers like turbo or some off the wall brand

im running headers with turbo mufflers and they are still loud. what about a stock muffler?

I would say try running some cheap mufflers that are still decent but that are not made to be loud at all. Not quite sure of any brands to reccommend though.

I have borlas on my 00 gmc. It is only a hair louder than stock and definatly has a mean growl when accelerating.

I have headers with with with 2 1/2 all the way back with flows.... Big block really makes some noise....try getting a cat.

I talked to a guy at a local muffler shop telling him I wanted my truck really quiet to hide any hint of a powerful engine and not affect performance to much with restrictive exhaust and he suggested to put glasspacks in front of the mufflers, and that will quieten it down some more. Anybody ever heard of or done this?

How can you go wrong there? As long as it flows nice.
I think I have seen that in an exhaust catalog for factory replacement on some car.

Putting a cat in the exhaust dosen't quiet it down much if any. My 2"ramhorns/ 2.5" cats/ 40 series flows were still loud as heck. If you want quiet you need stock mufflers. Yes power will suffer some but it wont hurt anything. A small glasspack in front of somthing like a borla or quieter flowmaster might be ok though, its a good idea.

Crawdad, does the truck already have an H-pipe or X-pipe? If not, adding one should help a little. Also, where do the exhaust tips exit from under the truck?

Glasspacks would definately take some of the harshness out, similar to a resonator. But I would put them after the muffler, not in front. Heat is what breaksdown the fiberglass, so the farther back in the system they are, the longer they will last.

What kind of system's currently on your truck?

I have a number of friends who swear by Dynomax Super Turbos as a good combination of noise level, sound quality, and performance. If you can put the mufflers farther back you can neck down the tailpipes to 2-1/4" and that may help as well.

No H pipe, and they don't exit. Well, the pipes don't extend out the truck bottom. They just point down just in front of the wheels.

So are you mainly wanting to quiet down the sound you hear in the cab, or do you want to quiet down what other motorists around you hear?

An H-pipe would help even out the exhaust pulses. I have seen quotes range from $20 to $45 to have a H-pipe installed at a muffler shop. But I think the bigger problem is the turn downs under the truck. That can, and will, cause the whole truck to resonate at certain frequencies and actually amplify the sound. If you were to add some tailpipes to go over the axle and either exit under the rear bumper, or to each side behind the wheel, it would make it much quieter inside the cab.

If you exit it out in front of the rear tires it will be louder than running it out the back. As for Quiet mufflers, I suggest Dynomax Super Turbo's. The are not that loud and don't hurt flow. If you are wanting quiet, I wouldn't go with glasspacks.

My objective is to quiet down the entire system both to myself in the cab and to my neighbors. The mufflers/tailpipes that are on there now were just thrown together from pieces by my nephew and his teenage friend. They are so loud, they purely hurt your ears. I'm tearing out everything except for the mufflers and plan to put in new mufflers (brand ?), and new tailpipes straight out the back. I've got a muffler shop ready to do it for me. I'm just trying to decide which brand to go with that will give me (1) a fairly free-flowing system, and (2) a quiet system. I don't mind a little throaty rumble as long as it doesn't sound like a Harley with straight pipes when I accelerate. BTW, the Dynomax sounds pretty good.

An "H" pipe will quiet it a BUNCH & run tail pipes all the way out the back. The longer the pipes are the quieter it will be. From past systems Ive used, Ive noticed that installing the mufflers clear in the back will make it a lot quieter in the cab too. Good luck with it...corn

ive got hedman headers, 2 1/4" pipe, and summit turbo mufflers and pipe exiting at a 45 degree behind each wheel on my 89, its really quiet but sounds pretty good... the summit turbos are only $15 each

I have mine coming out the back of the truck and most people cannot really hear them. I would not keep them in the front due to the fumes. Just my thoughts.

I HATE loud trucks!! or cars
The real goal I had years ago was a set of headers and mufflers that had around 2 psi back pressure with no noise.
People putting on a set of loud mufflers just says to me "they must REALLY want attention" 'cause they didn't get it as a child.
There is NO valid reason (to me) why one would make there vehicle loud.......they claim to want more power doing that but you can do that without the noise.

I did it with a set of Hooker headers and two Dynomax Hemi Super Turbos (part 289-17789 from Jegs) and I have no noise and very little back pressure.

The easy way is open headers but the legal and hard way is little back pressure and headers.
