I replaced the switch and all three bearings.
If you are going through it I would recommend replacing the bearings. The switch you can replace at any time without too much trouble, but if it's questionable you may as well change it now. The other part that commonly breaks is the shifter pointer, but if it's not broke now no reason to change it. Once you tear into it you will want to look everything over but most of the internal parts are pretty heavy. I have only restored one column so I am not going by a lot of experience here.
