80 gmc no start
My 80 GMC just quit when I went to go to the lumber yard. I had bent the contact on the rotor button to make better contact. I ran it for a while then it just quit. Since thi s I replaced rotor button with a new one. When I crank it I see that it's getting gas , but it will not fire. It has new plug wires. I replaced the ognition module.and am going to try another coil. I'm just wondering, if I could have a broken timing chain. I've noticed after I had a new short block installed that, occasionally, when I drive the motor cuts. I even noticed it happening a couple of hours before it just quit. How can I test for a broken timing chain? Thank you for any feedback on this issue.

I had a similar problem with my '89. I can't remember if the 1980 had electronic ignition, but my distributor looked fine but something cracked internally and took out the pickup coil. Mine just stopped running while cruising down the road...luckily, close to my usual shop! A new distributor and off she went.
Crank it and check for spark. Mine had none at all when the dist. self-destructed. |

my 76 had this same problem and the ignition module and HEI were replaced... i have since replaced the ignition module twice cuz it keeps burning them whenever it rains or severly high humidity

250 should have gears,no chain.Here is a longshot.See if you can turn the rotor button with the dist still in the engine,you shouldn't be able to.I have a 250 in a 67 that breaks the rollpin in the dist gear,and stops firing.When the cap is removed, and the engine cranked the rotor moves,but it is out of time.
If you can't turn the rotor,this isn't the problem. Pull a wire off,and check for spark to the plugs.Make sure you have 12v to the dist/coil. Make sure the little buttin inside the dist cap isn't burnt up Check for wires shorting to the frame. Hope this helps

This morning, I checked to see that my problem was definitely the lack of spark. According to the Haines chevy truck manual, In order to check out the coil I would need to check out the ohm resistance from the ground coming out of the coil with the inside center button on the dis. cap. there was no connecter there. Told me that either me or the garage had improperly installed the coil. To make a long story short I made a wire connector, installed it properly. The truck started right up, and run real nice. ( Noteworthy- I had burnt up my coil.) Thanks for the help fellows!!!! marvxyz
