You're supposed to tie the windshield in with the rope.

We used to use the thin braided rope from an old venetian blind (about 1/8" diameter or so) on VW Beetle windshields. It's definitely a 2-man job. One pushes from the outside while another pulls the rope from the inside. Lubrication is a must. Otherwise it might not seat correctly (and maybe pop out under stress?). KY jelly works well, and rinses off with water.
