If the engine has later model head on it, the port on the side of the head will be too small for the sensor. If this is the case, you will have to get yourself a sensor and mount it somewhere else. I purchased a thermostat water neck off of an early 80s car that had the correct size hole in it for the temperature sensor.

The temperature sensor wire should be green and might have remnants of some funky cloth/fiberglass tubing around it.
