Fan/Shroud position
My fan currently sits totally within the throat of the shroud (the rear end of the blades are about 1" from the rear of the shroud). I am replacing a 3 core with a 4 core radiator and this will bring the fan further inside the shroud.
I read somewhere that the fan should have blades outside of the shroud about 1 inch for best performance. Is this true?

The 4-row radiator I put in my truck was externally the same size as the OEM 3-row; only the core is thicker, so the fit was the same.
That said, the fan sits half in and half out of the shroud. Never had an overheating problem, even in extreme conditions - even with the 3-row, and I've owned the truck for 28 years.

The 4 core I have is 3/4" wider than the 3 core at the top mounts. I need to find new mounts.
It has a long water pump. Here are some pics. I think maybe I should cut the adapter that sits between the fan and the pump shorter?

If you cut the adapter shorter, you had better have it done on a lathe. Otherwise your fan will not spin straight and will probably vibrate. I've seen adapters of various lengths for sale at auto parts stores.
