I have a silly question but I thought someone could help me easy my mind about an impending project.

Are the rocker boxes a direct "bolt-in" or is there welding needed to replace them? I've been living in London of the past year and a half and just got home two weeks ago. First Saturday I was home I pulled the K5 out of storage, fired it up and sent it to the shop for a new tranny rebuild. I'm suppose to pick it up after work today and hope to get to work on the body over the long weekend.

Welcome back to the states. Post some pictures of your rig when you get it back from the tranny shop.

As far as the rocker boxes go, I believe you are going to have to break out the welder.

What is the easiest way to post a photo?

The new rockers have what looks like a lot of holes for bolts, and I know that the caps bolt on, so should I assume that the welding needed is spot welding at best?

The welds are about 3/4" long beads, there are quite a few of them. The welds go on the long parts and on the front, there are little holes and notches were you are supposed to put the welds. The back part of the rocker box bolts to the bed floor, bedside and the bulkhead at the rear of the cab floor. The boxes are welded into place - hopefully with a hard top on and with doors in place so everything is aligned. New reproduction boxes are now available with the back piece as well. They are a critical piece of the body so if you replace, make sure you take your time and get the square as once installed, if wrong, can be a bugger to get everything else set correctly.

Thanks for the info guys on the rocker boxes (I'm hoping not to have to replce them) as well as the kudos for the Chevys. Unfortunately, the '68 C-20 went to a new owner a couple of months ago while I was still working abroad (needed to pay back my father-in-law on a three year truck loan for the Blazer!).

I opted to keep the Blazer even though the C-20 subby came in real handy for carpooling the kids to school and camping on the weekends. But as you all know, there is nothing like going topless in your K5!

I got the K5 back from the tranny shop on Friday and it runs great! I prepped for the needed body work I can do (sand, sand, sand) and am looking for a bodyman who will touch a "non-insurance" rocker replacement on the passanger side (already had the driver side's floor and rocker replaced two years ago). My hood has quite a bit of surface rust (it has pitted in some areas) but I am hoping to get it smoothed out enough to not have to buy a new one (I would love to find a GOOD used one, anyone, anyone....) but no luck so far on that front.

As I start the restoration I will keep you all posted.
