I took the cage, or stereo holder or what ever you want to call the part that actually mounts to the dash and hods the stereo, and traced it with a black magic marker. Then I took a hack saw, held it with some vise-grips and started cutting it out. As you can see from the pic, the din sized radio will not cover all the whole impression of the old stock unit. You can make a plate, or just deal with it. If you mount it up high, the lower line will never be noticed.

I did that with mine.. but it was already hacked and my cab is so rusty I plan to replace it in a couple years anyway.
Alternatives include: 1) There are modern stereos made to fit these openings. Some are even nice repro looking models that can run CD changers. 2) You can use an original (or mockup) non-working model in the dash and mount your DIN mount in a custom box behind the glove box door.

It was some kind of kit ya buy for installing those radios. They are pretty common and can be used in different type cars/trucks.

'Ya gots ta du what ya gots ta du'
When you want to put a stock uncut dash back in your truck I have a one from a 1967 that I will sell you. There are many stereos that will fit in the stock opening. There is are stereo's you don't need to see to use and you can get the remote in IR or RF plus a 10 CD changer. My thoughts are to stick a stock (lighted) AM push button radio in the dash and use the hidden stereo. just my 2 cents.

I really don't see what the big deal is with cutting up the dash.. Maybe if you were going with factory rebuild.. but they way i look at it is if you want nice tunes, do what you got to do to get them.. cut the dash cut the doors ect... I don't see people people sayin anything about a c-notched frame or a modified instrument cluster. Thats why these trucks are soo popular... you can do whatever you want to do to them and they still look good and serve there respective purposes.. My dash is cut and i love it..
sorry for the rant.

This has been debated over and over here. If you have a bone stock truck that you are showing or is in really nice shape, don't cut the dash. These dashes are a dime a dozen and can be fixed. Same with the doors. I have always had 6x9's in the doors because they sound so good. I cut my dash because I wanted a up to date head unit that sounds good. I don't think cutting my dash or doors hurt the value of my truck any at all.

I don't care what anybody says...I have yet to see a decent, not good, but decent looking aftermarket stereo that will fit in like the factory setup does.
Kenwood, Alpine, etc. they make good products so USE them and cut the DASH!

The dash I cut up there was on a truck that was a worthless total turd. The top POS of all POS's.
Cutting it did absolutly nothing value wise, the das was already junk....along with every other body panel on it. It's probably been crushed and shipped to China to become a cheap necklace or trinket. The sad thing is, it's worth more as the trinket. If you want good tunes, cut your dash. They are makin replacement metal now...you can weld it up as easily as a cab corner...even easier. C notch makes you cool Chop top makes you cool but god forbid you install a good stereo where it belongs...in the dash. |

only reason I don't cut the dash and the reason I will hide the stereo is to try to deter theft.
I can hide all kinds tunes in that suburban! shh! |

I have debated this issue with myself ever since I got my truck. Since I would like good tunes at a decent price I think the only way to go is to cut the dash. You can't even find the "old stye radios" anymore unless you pay top $ for one of the retrofit type radios made. If you put it in the glove box or something it is too hard to reach. I am considering one of the newer heads that will control a ipod and yes speakers in the doors. with a sub under the seat.
