What have i got myself into????

Just kidding... Look what i started yesterday evening.... Painless 18 circut wiring harness. Complete replacement for every single wire in my truck... It has been really simple so far.. wires labled and prebundled.

Although i will say it is pretty intimadating opening up that box and seeing all those wires.... WHEW!!!

Yes i did have to cut my firewall and drill two new holes. I only had to cut about 1/4 at the most. Part number 10206. got it from jegs and it cost me 309.99 but right now painless has a 35 dollar rebate if you buy before the end of the month.. so it equals out to be about 275 bucks

It's not too bad if you take your time and check things out as you go along.

Couple of observations... There's a few funky things about the way they are wired up that you might want to think about while you're there... some of it you might not care about. One thing you might not notice until you are done (I didn't) is that the power to the radio does not come off of the accessory circuit, so when you turn the ignition to the left, no radio. Easy enough to fix while you're at it. Other things that I thought were pretty weak (but you might not care about) include their "work around" if you are using a high output alternator w/ a lot of accessories, and the power window wiring is always hot... not keyed. You may also want to rewire your side markers to work with the parking lights. There's probably a few other things that I forgot...

Well got her all buttoned up last night and i can say that it was the easiest wiring job i have ever done... It is just really really really time consuming. Although i do have one question.. last night when i started her up she was running great and when i shut her off SHE WAS STILL RUNNING GREAT!!!! it wouldn't shut off.. I traced the prob to the wires comming off the alternator.. I think i am getting some feedback from the alt. exciter wire and it is keeping the system powered up.. (it will work and shut off just fine with the plug on the alt. disconnected) So can i just go and get a one way diode and splice it into that wire? I think that might work...

I would recommend the painless wiring kit to anyone.

70'_402: Did you get to specify things, like V-8, HEI, automatic/manual etc... or is it "one size fits all" with extra wires? I also have the 67 "3 dislplay" dash and would like to switch to one that has all the gages. Is there any specification on this, or does it come wired for either one??? Thanks

It comes wired for evey option that was offered and some that weren't.. you can either wire up the guage pod with lights or with guages.. as far as hei, you just bypass the ballast resistor and wire directly to the distributor....very simple

as far as specifics, you will have some extra wires for options that you don't have or need. one size fits all i guess you could say.

I just used the Painless harness for my 383 TPI wiring and it worked awsome, and easy to do.

yes,i agree,when i started mine,i was really overwhelmed,but as you go,pice by piece,it gets easier and easier,worked out great for my power locks and windows

Is the whole power feed not coming from the dead side of the starter(until the key is in the run position) I think that is the same point the dist draws power from too?? Thats why no radio while the key is in the acc position????

Kudos to Painless. I went through this setup not long ago...well I'm sort of still doing it as I add more gizmos like a radio, A/C, etc...
It sure is nice to have modern fuses and labeled wires. Although I'm still trying to figure out where my cruise control wire from painless plugs in..
'til I do, I'll just keep using my floormat propped against my gas pedal.

I think I'm going to let my dad do the wiring in my truck. That looks way to complicated for me to do, especially scince I have never none anything like this in my life.

The wiring follows very closely to stock with a few obvious additions but it's not really upgraded as much as it could be. The power comes off of the battery and alternator. The radio lead is just not wired into the accessory circuit. Don't get me wrong, it's a great setup and it's relatively easy to install. there are just a few things that I wished had been different. Easy enough to address if you think it through. Even with the 18 circuits I had to add a couple external fuses to isolate everything the way I wanted.
