wierd cab holes?

I looked at a very clean (72)? cab last night and I can get it for $ 400.00
But it has holes in the front of the roof where running lights were and it looks like it has factory raised bosses for the lights to sit on. It definitely isn't custom, I think there were four or five holes and bosses. Can anyone help identify this cab? Otherwise the cab is exactly like my 72. Thanks

Yes it's factory. Starting in 69, cab roof lights were a factory option in series 10-30 trucks. 67/68 were dealer installed option and the cabs did not have the raised roof pads. Curiously, series 40-60 cabs (essentially the same cab configuration), had the raised roff provision all years 67-72.

I'm not sure what your plans are, but the running lights make a truck look like a "truck" so if your're going to build a 4x4, 3/4 ton or 1 ton 2wd and any configuration that these lights would augment, get that cab! If it's a 2wd drive that your're going to decomission from true work truck lineage, then pass it by IMO. The cab lights would look silly on a lowered truck and grafting on a roof section, though doable, would be a shame.

Here's a 72 GMC that came from the factory with the "look at me I'm a real truck!" look.

Thanks for the great input. This is a 4wd cab and it would go on a 3/4 ton 4x4. I agree it would look great. I just didn't want to do something not factory.
So if I get this right, the special boss pads for the lights were an option?
And it was available on a 72 k20 chevy truck? thanks again.

The only trucks that looks good with these lights are the bigger trucks like the one ton or 4 wheel drive 3/4 ton and would not look good on a regurler 1/2 ton two wheel drive. IMO But I do like them on the bigger trucks.

I wanted the raised set of clearance lights on my truck but couldn't find a decent donor panel till the day that we painted the truck. Some day I will do the swap but for right now it goes up and down the road just fine without them. Although it would look better with them installed, it would add to the LED fender lights. I think that my truck qualifies for the size requirement too. Have any of you ever seen the newer style Siverado clearance lights on one of our trucks. The one's that come in three pieces, the center one containing 3 lights.

By the way I am so excited the truck passed its smog test yesterday so I can register it for 6,000 kg. (13,320 lbs.) now, so I can legally tow the car trailer behind it.

Great looking truck. My uncle has a parts 72 2wd that has I think dealer added running lights that are orange in the middle with a green light on each end. The cab is not raised though. I take a picture.

GMC Dually, your truck would look better with the running lights on top. To me it looks like the truck are missing the lights. Yours is the kine of truck that needs the lights.

Has anybody tried installing the 69-87 style lights on a cab roof without the mounting pads? I have two old Grote cab lights on my truck, one on each side of the cab and they look cool but five would be better. I have 5 I pulled from a 69 GMC but I thought it would be too much trouble to wire 'em up.

Actually, option code U01 got you the marker/clearance lights on the 67 and 68 trucks too.... not just dealer installed.
While I can't find it in the 67 section, I did find in the 68 section where it states that the marker/clearance lamps are manditory options when getting dual rear wheels.

I think that I will buy a set and trial fit them to see, and post some pics of them. It will tie into the newer silverado theme I have going, including the cargo/brake light on the cab and the seats.

Not neccessarily. My '67 C-50 does not have the raised bosses like my '69 C-30 and '70 C2500. It has the chrome bullit style dealer installed roof lights.

Joesjunk did it on his '68 C-30 (below) and it looks great. I was going to graft on a cab panel with bosses, but now I'm going to do the same Joe did on my '67 C-30 since his turned out so good.

The cab clearance lights are ICC-mandantory on 10.000#-up trucks(dual wheels,usually).So,yeah,the factory have provided theseeven before the`69-up bossed style.I always wonder why they bothered with the bosses.I installed the factory lights on my`71 NAPCO without bosses out of ignorance.It wasn`t until later that I realized it should have the bossed pads.Been on a search for a high-hump a/c cab light unit since.Got one this spring,finally.So,rivernut,buy it!!

It wasn't mandatory until 1969, though, even though some 68 and older did have them dealer installed. I have (2) 67 C-30's and and neither one of them have cab lights.
