IMHO (in my humble opinion) I would "steer away" from doing the steering box exchange as I tried that several (more than 30) years ago, and was disapointed in the outcome. Since then I removed the front axle and have gone to an IFS (Martz Engineering). www.martzengineering.net
But if you are already there and ready to try that type of conversion, then my other thought is to "steer-away" from the "Tubular" crossmembers to mount the 350. I prefer to tell "truck-nuts (and our customers) to use the weld-in frame mounts. (See Photo) These are designed for the 55-59 Chevy GMC converts to a SBC. (small block chevy). These are very easy to install and locate using the original bellhousing and original transmission pads. Mock up the SBC to the bell, and then you can put a level on the intake manifold. Get the intake level and mark out where the new weld-in mounts are to be mated to the inside of the frame rails. If you want to get a price and availability on the weld-in/bolt-in mounts send me an email or visit my web site. As for the Power Steering Conversion, Do some research on using a Toyota PS Box. This is the latest in that conversion and is much simpler to install as the Kit is better engineered for the 55-59 than the "Old Style" that is still being sold (and that I found to be poorly engineered. That is my two cents worth... rico_bob Web site: www.ricos-rods-and-relics.com
