Exhaust pic request

For all you folks with lowered trucks in the 4/6 range, with headers/dual exhaust and the mufflers terminating in front of the rear axle with turndowns, let me see some pics if you can. I am in the process of redoing my stuff since I swapped to Hooker full length headers and wanted to see what your's looks like.

Mine, I have the headers going into an x pipe and then the mufflers. I only have it mocked up for now. When I get it to my liking, I'm going to get everything welded up. It looks pretty good but just wanted to make sure it will work and look ok.

Thanks

I don't have mine together yet, but I plan to do exactly what you described. I am using Hedman Elite truck headers with 1-3/4" primaries and 3" collectors. It will flow into a Summit 3" universal X-pipe positioned right behind the transmission yoke. Then there will be a short section of 3" pipe with an 'S' curve to get back to the 22" long Hooker Aerochamber mufflers. It will end with some 3" Flowmaster turndowns right in front of the axle. I expect it's going to be pretty loud.

My mufflers are around 25" long themselves, so I didn't need anymore pipe from the x pipe. When installed, you can see the mufflers through the fenderwell and they are pretty low. I worry about dragging them over speedbumps and such, although I hope to not drive like a maniac so maybe this won't be a problem. I was thinking maybe getting a short piece of pipe bent like maybe yours is, in a S shape to raise the mufflers up some so they won't be so visible from the outside. This will push them back farther though.

I'm 50 so the loud part of all this has got to go. My old ears can't take it anymore. I bought some NAPA Quietflow's. These are good mufflers but are OE replacement. I can't wait to not hear my exhaust so much. I'll take the little bit of HP loss and smile while driving around while listening to my favorite music without having to turn up the volume so loud to be able to hear it.

Thanks for the reply.

I have another project car that I dualed out and used turndowns before the axle. The biggest problem with it is actually at idle sitting still. The sound waves bounce off the pavement and reflect back to the chassis. The whole floor of the car resonates. Once you get moving, it actually sounds quite nice. I am going to try some sort of sound deadening material to see if that will help it. I've also heard that it helps if you angle the tips out to the side a bit.

I am 62 and I still love the mellow tone pipes. My hearing is just fine. You will not hear quiet pipes on any of my trucks. Now my wifes Jeep, well, that is another story. By the way-I am not old yet!!

How does that sound Kelsfine69, with the 5" tips like that? I would say get some Dynomax Ultra-Flow mufflers, with 45º angle tips welded to them, angled out at a 45º angle (Not turndown but not out to the side, in the middle). This will give you the queitest exhaust.

Would the gear-vendors overdrive work on a 350? How do you like it? How much trouble was it to install? I am interested in that set up. Would like to get more than 12 miles to the gallon. Sorry for so many questions.

Thanks for the pics guys. I was more interested in pics through the rear fenderwell. Anyway, I think I've got everything figured out as to what I plan on doing. Trouble with what I'm doing is the x pipe. This adds length to everything and thus shoves it all farther to the back. I would have liked to have the mufflers up toward the front more to keep from seeing them from the side.

So, what I did was to go from my headers with some very short pieces of pipe so it would clear the crossmember. I had these made to an S shape with as tight of a bend as I could get. Then into the x pipe. Out of the x pipe I had two more S pipes made with a 3.5" offset and turned them up to raise the mufflers at the back. This gets them up so they aren't as visible and so low to the ground. Without the S pipes at the back I would probably have drug the mufflers off.

Now if I only had a welder and knew how to weld. I have to assemble everything with clamps and then mark it all so if it moves I can put it back in the correct position. Take it all off, carry it to the muffler shop and have it welded. Sucks, but I have no other choice.

Anyway, when I get it all done, I'll take some pics of it.

Thanks again.

Mike

my 76 has headers from a 4x4 or a camaro, they are tight on the motor then dump right in front of the crossmember, so I modified them a bit, plus used a couple of u-bends to connect it up to a 2 1/2" system with dynomax hemi turbos, over the axle straight out the back.
