Personally, I would stay away from the North Star motors. Too Expensive to adapt and not as reliable or powerful as the GenIII motors...

Hell, even my buddy that's a tech at Crest Cadillac in Plano hates them.

i would stay away from them as well. if your looking to swap to something modern the ls1 would be the way to go. the cad motors were overly complicated and not very reliable. not to mention some jerk decided the starter should be under the intake and you have to pull the intake off to change the starter. its not a fun job. i have also seen quite a few with blown bottom ends with not a ton of mileage

Not only that, but GenIII engines like the LS1 can be easily adapted to use a carburetor with an older TH350 or 700R4 tranny.

I think the Northstar swap is cool if you don't mind the extra effort. It's good to be different sometimes if you have the skills/resources to do so

Anyone can swap an LS1 based motor

I think it would be a neat swap. Definitely not the most powerful, but a cool idea. I think the Northstar would fill in the engine bay nicely too because of the DOHC heads...those things are pretty wide. Besides the 4.6l out of the STS is rated at 275hp, I think, and its all aluminum...IMO thats nice upgrade from a stock 350.

If you have the money to do it....go for it and post plenty of pictures!!!!!

I have the skills and resources and a very low cost motor to drop in. just was wondering what tranny had to adapt for the northstar. I aint looking to win dragraces, just an efficient driver. and 32v V8 means better breathing. just think it would be something different you dont see every day. that or I may put it in a 32 lowboy. just havent decided yet.
