Is it a GMC? If it is then I'd just leave out the extra C and see how that decodes. The GMC vins were a little different, and not consistently different. I don't think anyone here has ever found a good source for decoding the extra numbers in GMC vins, but I'd be glad to find out if someone has!

I believe all 72 VINs started with CCE. Don't ask me why, maybe Chevy just wanted to be different?

I believe the extra c was for vehicles sold in california, as they had special emissions and were denoted as such.

In 72, GM put an extra letter in the begining of the VIN. I can't remember what GMC had, but C was added to all Chevy VINs. Ignore it, and decode the rest acording to all charts you just refered to.

The C in the first part of the 67-71 vin never stood for Chevrolet it stood for Convetional Cab. CE***** meant conventional cab eight cylinder.

In 1972 GM added the C to stand for Chevrolet.
in 1972 GM added a T to stand for GMC.

so a 72 8cyl Chev pickup would start with CCE******
so a 72 8 cly GMC would start with TCE*******

GMC aint that hard to decode. You got one post it.

Mine is a 69...it doesn't have the added letter at the begining.
i don't have my VIN handy, but Ithink it is;
CM10DSA12797...I might be a little off on the numbers at the ehnd...but it is something close to that.
C = Conv. cab
M = V6 gas engine
10 = 1/2 ton
D = Fleet bed (wide side in '69 GMC manual)
S = assembly plant...not sure which one.
A = '96
12797 = 12797th built in the model year.

Lets see.... without actully looking it up.

Hmm the
C = conventional cab
M =V6
1 = half ton
OD = meant fleetside
S =St louis
A =1969
12797 = 12797th built in the model year.

Some of those USA built GMC's have thing a little different than Canadian built GMC's.

I know on Chevys the sequential number starts at 100001, not 000001. Going by what's posted above, does GMC start at 00001? Or do they start at 10001?

i have seen some sequentia, unit numbers on some of these turcks begin with 60000 and i dont know why, i coulda swore all were 10000 and up , but soe arent,,, wierd....

72 and up has extra letter digit at beginning of the VIn code, in later years 73-up there were CM CCL CCS, etc etc, all depnds on engine

and second digit signified 2wd or 4x4,

CCE in 72= conventional 2wd V8
CKS in 72= Conventional 4x4 6 cyl

and so forth,,,, you get the idea. look in your owners manuals and in your factory GM service manuals for more, info

also ther is a model code found on the fireweall pass side up high and also on the SPID lable on the glovebox door, the model code is normally the first code typed out on left hand side column, its is not part of the VIN, it is the bed/chassis type IE model code

Ex: CE10934

C= 2wd E= 1-= 10=series v8 09=127" 34'=fleetside

other suffixes(last two digits):
04= step
03=no bed/chassis cab
other models were made also, etc etc

wheelbase code of 10(4th and 5th digits)= longhorn/1 ton wheelbase(133")

I dont believe EGR came along until 1974. Same year as the catalytic converters in cars. Was it 76 in trucks for cats?
