Tachometer recommendation - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Guys (gals too I guess...); I need some recommendations on a tach for my 1984, C10, silverado, (modded) 305, auto. I want to mount a tasteful tach either on the dash top corner, steering wheel column, or maybe under dash about where the ashtray is......I need some recommendations on some good, reasonably priced, tachometers..........THANKS!

AND, installation tips if you have any.........

i personally like a midsize autometer, white face, mounted on the steering column....but thats just me....they hook up real easy, almost foolproof

summit usually is the cheapest i've found to buy them from...i dont have time right now to find a link, but i'm thinking without a shift light, there only around $50-65

I just put an AutoGauge tach in my Suburban. Got it from Summit, was only about 50 bucks, I think (model 2300). Pretty nice unit, easy to hook up. Just a switched +12V, a ground, a wire to the distributor tach terminal, and one for the backlight. I mounted mine on the steering column so when you put it in Drive, the tach is centered straight up on the column. Works great.

I mounted a tach on the column in my 77 Blazer. If you route the strap carefully, it (the tach) won't move at all when shifting gears and will always be in the same position. Here is a pic of it.

Here's what I did... Cheapy Sun Pro Tach. ($29.00 at Autozone) and some hose clamps...

I installed the Autometer Pro-Comps and surfaced mounted them. Like here

But I used these gauges.

I'll eventually get a new bezel and mount them like the 2nd picture.

I have mounted a 3" Auto Meter tach on the post just above the dash pad. I used a flat stap of aluminum and drilled one hole in it for the screw that holds the plastic trim to the post to go through (I had to use a longer screw). I cut the end of the bracket at an angle (where it lines up with the windshield rubber gasket), this will hold the bracket at the angle you want it to sit at. On the other end I drilled two holes for the mounting bracket of the tach to bolt to. This strap is not very long and the tach face sets about even with the edge of the dash. OH BY THE WAY, there are no holes in the dash top and when you take it out, the post is clean also.
