Question Who Knows Their Hubcaps??

I just looked in the FAQ and Search but no luck. Who knows the facts about the 69-72 4x4 hubcaps vs. 73-78 hubcaps. I've been talking with some hubcap dealers and they say that the only difference is the color of the center bowtie. They say that the same samping is used for both era's?

Is there really any other difference (when comparing 4x4, 3/4 ton, stainless steel) between these years other than the color of the Bowtie?

Thanks,
72longbed

I thought I saw this Posted on the Board at one time?

Re: Who Knows Their Hubcaps??

The difference that I see is the Blue Bowtie is Yellow on 73 and up and the Bowtie area on 72 and back is raised where the 73 up is caved inward. I have sets of both.

Question Re: Who Knows Their Hubcaps??

So that would lead me to believe that there are two different 'stampings' or toolings? Can anybody else verify this?

Thanks,

Re: Who Knows Their Hubcaps??

The 69-72 caps have the center bowed out, the 73-78 caps are bowed in, but can be pushed out and the bowtie can be painted. Then they'll look just like the 69-72 style. That's what I did with this stainless one, except the original 1970 cap is painted.

Re: Who Knows Their Hubcaps??

To throw a stick in the spokes, I have seen 3 NOS white 72 hub caps, that were concaved, or pushed in in the center. No idea what was up, but that's what I saw.
At one point, the yellow bow tie ones went to chrome instead of stainlenss. also.

Re: Who Knows Their Hubcaps??

I was thinking the chrome versions were the earlier ones. The inner rims used to crack more on these. The stainless inner bead rims usually bend and dent. I remember a couple of 1969 and 1970's 1/2 tons with the chrome caps. I think I have a couple of the newer 73 and up 3/4 ton caps that appear to be chromed outers on stainless cap.

The 1/2 ton caps all had the concaved centers. I again thought that the 69-72 3/4 ton caps (blue centers) were all convex and 73 and up 3/4 ton caps were the concaved ones. Both painted and stainless or chrome were available on all the years. Usually was an option and often went with base thru deluxe thing with base models more often having painted caps and fancier trucks had the stainless or chrome caps.

Then of course there was the full wheel cover caps on cst and cheyennes.

Re: Who Knows Their Hubcaps??

the concave ones may well have been 1/2 ton, that would explain it.

Re: Who Knows Their Hubcaps??

Here's a pic of the K10 Stainless hubcap I have for sale. It definitly has a concave center, and definitly is an original Blue bowtie.

So I think I understand now that the 3/4 ton 69-72 were convex with Blue bowtie, and the 1/2 ton were concave with Blue Bowtie. Were the 73 and up 3/4 tons concave or convex?

Thanks,
72longbed

Re: Who Knows Their Hubcaps??

Mine have all been concave on 73 up.
And do not forget wheel diameters are different. That should be a tell tale on tonage.

That's exactly how the chrome one was that I have. It had the concave center with a yellow bowtie, I just pushed it out to make it convex and I painted the bowtie blue. I just saw a couple 3/4 ton hubcaps on a 78 chevy truck at the junkyard and they're the same way.

Re: Who Knows Their Hubcaps??

Ouch! I've got a headache!
I also have some 3/4T NOS originals in both 69-72 & 73+ that are chrome. I don't know how or why some were done in chrome, but they are beautiful.
NOS 3/4T caps are going for near $100 ea while the small 1/2T are only about $20 ea.

Wink Re: Who Knows Their Hubcaps??

Well, I'm no 'Purest' about my truck so I have to ask, who has the correct paint code for Chevy Bowtie Blue??
I've been driving around with only two front hubcaps and plain black steel rims in the back. Doesn't look like I'll be finding any 69-72 originals for the rear, so I'm going to 'make' some.

Can this color Blue still be had? Maybe one of you guys has a PPG or Dupont code for it?

Thanks,
72longbed

Krylon "True Blue" works pretty good. Not a real good pic, but here is one I painted.
