dash bezel question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I was wondering if this dash bezel is rare. The reason I ask is that I have not seen any other that has the choke and throttle like it anywhere. I have not seen this reproduced anywhere either.

i don't see a point for the throttle knob, maybe that's why it's rare. my right foot can work the throttle.

Hand throttle for work trucks, let the clutch out in granny gear and set the throttle, get out and load your hay, greens, whatever. Or so I've been told, that's the first one I've seen.

I was thinking along those same lines, having helped my buddy during harvest in Knoxville in my younger days. Although he used a tractor, it was basically the same function...He would set the throttle and jump on the flatbed trailer and stack the bails of hay I would throw up to him. He would jump down and turn around when we got to the end, then go back to stacking.

Just my thoughts on what it might be.

Years ago I managed a couple towing companies and some of the old retired towtrucks were still out in the back forty. They had the old Holmes 440 "spaghetti boom" wrecker bodies on them. They had hand throttles like that for speeding up the winch during wreck recoveries and so on. Also, when picking up a car or truck that was heavy, you wanted to speed up the motor in the towtruck so it wouldn't die when putting a load on it. Of course they had a hand throttle in the rear on the wrecker body as well, which was used most of the time. I would imagine anytime a truck was equipped with a PTO to run some sort of accessory or equipment, a hand throttle might be handy. Am I rambling?

My 69 has the manual throttle on it, however, it is located under the headlight switch on its dash bezel.

My green 67 has the throttle also just missing the knob.
They are not to common but there are a few out there

Mine was setup (from the factory) to be the fast idle circuit on my Big-block truck. It has an original Holley 2-barrell with a manual choke that needs a fast idle at warm-up. I can pull the throttle knob all the way out, but only the last 1/4 inch affects the idle.

Some of these must have been setup for PTO's and the other uses mentioned in all the posts above, but I bet you'll never see one without a manual choke also.

Come to think of it, I've never seen another original BB 2-barrell truck!

My dad's 53 has a throttle and choke cable. The throttle served two purposes.
1: You worked the hand throttle while you started it with the foot starter.
2: As mentioned above, pull it out while in granny gear to work.

My buddy found out it works really well for cruise control in his 51 GMC. He drove to South Carolina a while back in it and used it.

It's funny how we're so used to modern stuff that when we get in something old and simple, it's complicated.

I just pulled the bezel from my 72 and it had all for holes, no thottle switch. I'd say for a PTO or to keep idle up. It is kinda wierd to see 4 switches on a dash, IMO but different non-the-less.

I would think that using it for a cruise control COULD be dangerous due to the fact that it doesn't cancel out when you need to hit the brakes.

I thought they were in all (or maybe most) 2 ton and larger trucks for PTO use. At least every HD truck i have seen had it.

I have a manual throttle on my 1/2 ton 72 cheyenne. I always wondered if that was rare and from reading this it is. The Throttle is on the right side of the bezel underneath the washer-wiper. The Lights are on the left side. So there are only three of these holes, since it does not have the choke.

I imagine the hand throttle shows up on the SPID data sheet ? I have one in the longhorn . Cheers.

Camper trucks used them too... IIRC, longhronjeff's 69 CST/Camper Special 3/4 ton big block longhorn has that too. I know when he got it there were still heater hoses going into the bed that were just tied in together, the was for running heat in the camper in back. Kick the engine on, rev to 1500 - 1800 RPM, solid charge on battery, steady 200 degree coolant circulating into the camper...and a tired motor after only 60,000 miles.
