Neutral safety switch - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a 67 C-10 with a 72 (automatic shift) steering column. The truck came from the factory with a 3 speed manual but now has a turbo 350. The column has a new neutral saftey switch and I plugged it into an existing plug that was at the switch location. The truck starts in any position the shift lever is in. How can I fix this? I have not addressed this problem yet but a sense of direction would be nice. Thanks

go to your handy wire diagram see if the original 3 speed had a neutral safety switch,im not sure if they did,my 67 was a 3 speed as well and it was changed to an auto. i can look at my harness andsee what colors they used to go to the new neutral safety switch...

also, make sure your NSS is lined up right. Since, as you all should know (haha, yeah right, as we all should know my rusty rear end) the NSS works with a little pin dropping into position, yadda yadda, and if it isn't lined up, or if the pin is messedup or something, it could allow it to start in the wrong (or any) position. I doubt that's the deal, from the sounds of it, but I could be wrong, or right, dunno. just adding my two cents.

The plug you have down there isn't for a neutral safety switch. It is for the back up lights. Check the wiring diagram. You will have to get a new terminal(female variety) and remove the terminals from existing socket and reinstall them in the new one. While you are there you will have to add a wire to make the neutral safety switch function. Can't remember where this wire goes to for sure because its been so many years since I did this same swap! I do remember getting the terminal from a wrecking yard, which may be where I traced the wire for the neutral safety switch. If you follow this route you will also know where the existing wires plug into the new terminal.

The connector you plugged into the switch is probably for the back up lights (light green and dark green wires). There is a fat purple wire that runs from your ignition switch through the firewall at the fusepanel to the starter motor solenoid. You can cut and extend this wire and connect the two ends to the two free terminals on the neutral safety switch.

Ya, I do have backup lights. I think there were some extra not used connections on the switch also. I'll take a closer look tomorrow.

That switch has two connectors one for the back up light looks like ( |_ ) the other is the neutral safety switch that looks like ( = ). The switch is fairly easy to take apart to make sure the contacts are clean and it is working properly. As pjmoreland said the purple wire is the one connected to the neutral safety switch and the light and dark green wires are for the backup lights.

I located the = termanial on the switch on top of the column. I'll reroute the purple wire through this switch. I thought it would be more complicated than this. Thanks
