truck won't run

I was out snow wheelin with my 67' last wednesday and I parked it and went to start it up that night and I saw a bunch of sparks under the dash when I turned the key.It wouldn't even turn over.I dragged it to the shop and installed a new wiring harness because the one in it was melted in a place or two .Now it won't do anything .I even changed the switch.Would the starter have gone when I was getting sparks?

Do you have any power inside the truck at all?

MY $.02, check the fuseable link wire under the hood. Chances are it went out too from the way you described the frying of the inside. It sounds like something is shorted somewhere. Check you battery for damage also. Good harness frys can zap your battery too.

Re: truck won't run

Check the battery cable and wires going to your starter. The purple wire or the battery cable could have been melted by the exhaust or something and shorted out.

Re: truck won't run

I checked for power at the ignition switch. There is power there. That's the only thing I have in the cab at this time. The heater works fine but it hardwired to a toggle switch currently.I hope my battery is OK because it is a new Optima Red Top

Re: truck won't run

A power surge can knock out the voltage regulator....that little black box up front on the left in the engine compartment...and if it's a stock ignition switch, it good be toast.

Neutral safety switch?Seems to get over looked when doing a rewire.

Re: truck won't run

Well I changed the starter and checked all the wires and still nothing. The only wire not hooked up is the ine that goes to the proportioning valve.I don't think it should be the problem.I'm beginning to wonder what else is wrong. We tryed to pull start it and it sounded weird and wouldn't even try to fire.I relized there was no gas in it after we tryed but it still should have sounded like a motor turning over. I wondered if I had snow/water in the motor because the air cleaner was full of snow and ice.The dipstick doesn't show it but the way it sounds makes me wonder.

Don't panic!

Leave it alone for a while, then when you're head is clear, start at the battery and see how far you have electricity...
It's likely something weird or super simple (Like a fused link)...
Hang in there!

Re: truck won't run

TO check the engine, cross the starter posts with a screwdriver to see if it will turn over.

Re: truck won't run

I agree with TruckDude. If the engine is hydralocked it will do nothing. By trying to pull start it you could cause sever engine damage! Pull the plugs and turn it over. if it still will not turn over run a wire up from the starter solonoid and hit it to the positive battery term this will bypass the ignition and should turn the starter. if water blows out of the plug holes, clean the plugs and reinstall or replace the plugs its up to you. If the starter doesn't engauge when you jump it replace the starter. I'm assuming you have check the battery to see if it is good. If not you can take the optima back they have a 3 year warranty free replacement as long as the terminals are not melted or damaged in anyway. oh also check all your grounds. I had a similar situation that ended up being my ground to the alt bracket. I moved it down to the exhaust manifold and it turned over everytime.
