Installing Three Speed On Floor

Hi, I have a 1972 Stepside that had a straight six then had a 307 installed, with a three on the tree and I want to install a Hurst floor shifter into the truck, any thoughts?
Also looking into installing power steering but the bolt on the p/s pump bracket will hit the fan belt, see pics.

Re: Installing Three Speed On Floor

Hurst makes several grades of 3 speed shifters. The 3 speed shifter comparable to the 4 speed competition plus is the "Masterhshift". It runs about double the cost of the "Indy". I have installed several Hurst 3 speeds, the Mastershift was the easiest install and worked better than the Indys.

The one thing you might not like is the fact the shifter will end up real close to your right leg and the front of the seat. You can modify the mounting brackets a little bit to help this out, but you probably can't eliminate the it.

Re: Installing Three Speed On Floor

I put in the cheap shifter years ago, and am wishing I hadn't. Not because of the shifter quality, but the placement. If I movi it forward a bit, it came close to the dash or had a lond reach. If it was moved back, it was close to the seat.

Anyway, I went to an automatic later and will be changing the column for a tilt with automatic. Then close the hole in the floor and add the carpet.

Re: Installing Three Speed On Floor

I just bought the hurst mastershift kit yesterday. Try to install it in the next month or so (weather permitting). I'll take some pics and do a write up.

Hey Jim.......didn't notice you were so close. If you want get together to do these installs, we can practice on mine.

I have one up for sale. The only thing that's missing is the parts to replace the shifter levers on your transmission itself. You can use your original levers like I did. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=191897

Blazer parts. I think you commented on my post last week talking about the 3speed conversion. I'd like to know how it goes. I got a column from a 48K truck so I'm okay for now.

Jim

I put a Hurst Indy Shifter (for the truck) in mine and loved it. It worked withiout a problem ever. Your more than welcome to PM me on info. Mine is now going to a T350 and I still have all my stuff in the box.

Far as your power asteering, that looks like a late model pump which mounts a bit different. Probably why that bolt is in the way.

Re: Installing Three Speed On Floor

I put a Hurst Indy on my truck to replace the POS junkyard special shifter. What a world of difference, no problems as of yet with probably 5-600 miles on it.

Re: Installing Three Speed On Floor

I put in a 4 speed floor shift from a 3 on the tree, what I did that works great as far as shifting room is put the shift lever in backwards (that means that reverse is in the wrong place) This worked great however because one day the wife was at the store and left the truck running while paying for her gas and the guy that tried to steal the truck couldn't get the truck into reverse because the shift pattern was backwards. Dumb Criminal, lucky wife (divorce issue if it had been stolen Just Kidding).
