Top smoothing options questions! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

So who has smoothed their top and how did you go about doing it. Assuming all the crackes are fixed or not their to begin with where would you go from their? Would you over lay the enitre top with cloth and glass or sand off most of the texture and use a high build primer? Also most tops I have seen have slight low spots in the very top panels and what has anyone found to bring this area back up. I tried searching but had very limited luck. Any help would be great. I used to do alot of glass work (back in the jet ski racing days) but I am sure products have changed alot in the past 15+ years.

Most of the ones I have seen smoothed were sand with sandpapers ranging from 220 to 1500. There really isn't that much texture on the top I was told once you get into it. As for the sagging top. Search for posts by HUCK. He was trying to sell some tops. One had sagged on him. It turned into a how to post. One answer was drill holes and add foam insulation. Good Luck

Be carefull adding the expandable foam, the inside of the double wall top can/will bow out.

Kevin, I am taking mine to a boat shop this fall to have it reworked,
I will try to get him to let me take lots of pic's during the process

SMACK Woops I mean as long as it is free and does not cut into time with our wifes! At least I think that is what she just said. My ears are still ringing so it might have been somthing about the honey do list she hit me with.

Hmmmmmm, let's see, fix all my imperfections, smooth out the top, No
textured look anymore for me, and recoat my stripped hatch that was

Sand the top with 80grit and then 180grit and then prime with high build primer and block and prime. You can repair your cracks with fiberglass if you want or any of the new 3m products that are for SMC panel repair. You can use this stuff fast and use limited amounts. The best way I think. I used it on my 2000 vette that I bought that I needed to make some fiberglass repairs on. Good luck. You can look up products on their website.
