can you beleive my luck
I bought this POS in september, I'm on my 4th motor, Everything that could have gone out has. Finally it's a nice Sunday afternoon and i decided to take my wife for a ride for the first time in the blazer. I spent all morning finding an oil leak that turn out to be a plug that blew out of the passenger side dipstick.
(The new crate motors have a dipstick on both sides) Anyway we made it 3 blocks and the entire car shut down because of this and this. There was so much smoke that we thought the truck was on fire. Notice in the 1 pic the positive terminal is in 2 pieces. I didn't break it off it melted off. The wires, not the plastic were melted to the header. To make a long story short.....when i was plugging the passenger side dipstick i knock the + wire to the starter onto the header. The rest is history. The battery is toast, but i cant tell about the alternator and other electronics.

Re: can you beleive my luck
that's a bummer. i had a bad ground a few weeks back and toasted my batt. Now i have a pro vs. oakyrigged ground and a back up from the block to the fire wall, and a fat new batt. good luck next time!

Re: can you beleive my luck
I had a similar problem with an old connector left on the post of my starter:
1)Fried the wiring in the cowl gutter. 2)Battery would run down overnight. 3)Fixed the wires. No change. 4)The bettery began to get overcharged when I ran the truck.First indication was the headlights blew. 5)New alt./volt.reg./battery that took and held a charge, battery still cooking. 6)Put another battery that held a charge in,cooked that. 7)Installed one battery from diesel `Burb that I knew was good, still cooked.Put battery back in`Burb, cooking in that, now. 8)Two new batteries in the`Burb, still cooked(only drove it 5 miles). 9)New alt.in`Burb and now it`s ok. 10)Back to the`72,I removed new alt.& volt.reg and installed internal regulated-type alt.from`86 parts`Burb. No cooking, but the battery is still draining in overnight. 11)New OptimaGold, all seems fine. 12)I think the voltage regulator that I bought is junk(Advanced).I`ll see if the alternators ok.

Re: can you beleive my luck
special - you might have put a bad alt on, if the one of the diode's in the diode-trio goes out, it was actually suck power from the battery while the vehicle is not running. at night after you engine has cooled off, walk out to you truck and feel the alt. if its hot, its bad.
sorry to here about yet a nother near miss makovia, atleast it's a realllly good looking truck. -Cameron

Re: can you beleive my luck
i have no words of wisdom just a misery loves company thing. i built a 350 this fall/winter , nothing to put it in yet so i build a run stand . i've ran the motor a couple dozen times so far , seems like i've had NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS !!!! cracked head , leaking pan gasket , oilpan had a pin hole ...leaked , i've replaced several starters (all used) . the only good thing is all this stuff is easily fixed not being in a car/truck. good luck on your gremlins !!

just kidding. the red wire is only being held together by about 3 stands of wire. I prolly could have cooked them more if the lead terminal didnt melt off the battery.

Re: can you beleive my luck
Well i put an optimum battery in and all is well again. I didn't fry anything which is a little surprising considering the god awful smell.
But thats ok....nothing a new car scent air freshener cant fix
