Re: Found a boat guy to fix my top

Do you have any dents on the top of your top? Be interested if there is any other way of getting those out without using the expandable foam.

Re: Found a boat guy to fix my top

Not sure about the dents, but here are a few problem areas,

1. Looks like some of the outer layer? is cracking?

2. In 2 seperate spots the bolt down rail is missing

3. Hard to see, but it had snaps all around the hatch

Re: Found a boat guy to fix my top

I am going to repair a cracked hatch, Fiberglass is easy to work with. Rough up the top with a very light pass of 60 grit (by light I mean sand the whole top, just not for too long or you'll have holes or thin spots). By the coarse hair sheets because the fibers will add strength. Coat the top in the fiber glass gel, put down the sheet cover with more gel, smooth and let harden. The more sheets of glass, the more ridgid and the smoother the gel, the less bumps in the finish. Fiberglass is way easier than metal work. Same with a hatch, rough it up so the gel will stick and cover the whole thing with a sheet and it will repair and cracks. Try it! If you can't fix the hatch, it was junk to start with, right?!

Re: Found a boat guy to fix my top

I just fixed my cracked hatch this summer. Working with fiberglass really is pretty easy. Just really dusty...wear a dust mask! Actually I don't think your top looks too bad LUV.

The best resin to use is the stuff from West System (available through marine suppliers). Works much better than the stuff you buy at the local autoparts store. And the best thing about doing top and hatch repairs is that you can spray them with bedliner material to get the textured look and don't have to worry about the work being perfect like on sheetmetal.

Maybe not, but right now it wouldn't look cool on "GQ"

I actually aquired it w/ the 2wd, but it will go on "GQ"
after she is painted, and after it has been repaired

I`ve heard those Haitians do good work, for cheap too.I knew a boat person that worked for a general contractor.Somedays he`d show up with the school bus he drove in the morning and afternoon. At night,he was a chef at a classy resteraunt. But,I don`t think he did fiberglass.

Got his card from my brother, he hit a CHANNEL MARKER on the TN river
a few weeks back, smashed up the leading edge of his bass boat pretty
good, and spider web'd most of the paint down that side, he was going
to strip it down to raw glass, repair it, and re-shoot the paint / gelcoat
and the metal flake stripe, 4-6 weeks lead time and $1500 to do it, so I
figure mine should be in the $500 or less category, at least I hope so
