I stole this image from a thread JIMS1972STEPSIDE started, it reminded me of something.

Does anyone have the specs on the bolt marked as 5 in this picture?

I am trying to bolt up the pwr steering to the 327 in my Panel truck. It seems impossible to do this while the brackets and pump are assembled. Is it easier if I disassemble them and mount the bracket that way?

#5 in the picture is a 3/8"-16 x 1" long bolt. We usually have the pump assembled to the bracket when installing the bolt. It is a tough one to start. It helps if you trim the rubber flashing away from the motor mount ahead of time.

Once the bolt is started it is a chore to tighten it up as there is not much room.

If you install it with the engine out of the truck it is easy!

It is a chore to do in the truck. It is almost quicker to pull the engine out to put it in!

I bolted the bracket to the motor mount and left it loose, then mounted the other bracket to the pump and left them loose also. Then I just put it in and installed #11 and 12 and then tightened everything up. I didn't think it was all that difficult.

I tried it once last fall, for about half a day

I used the two front bolts to hold the assy in place (loose) while I tried to start the 3/8 bolt in the #5 position, what a pain!!!

I'll tackle it very soon again, thanks for the info!

I thought it was just me being stupid when I couldn't get that bolt in.
I worked on that one for 6 months off and on when I got time . I bet I invested 6 hours total trying different ways to get that bolt in. Finally took the truck in to a mechanic guy in town and he had it in in like 10 mins. I asked him how that was possible. He said what he did was to cut the end to a point sort of like a thread cutting bolt and that way the tip goes in and starts threading and centering itself in the hole. Wish I would have watched him do it so I could be more precise in my explaination but I didn't get to watch exactly what he did.He is old school and said it wasn't the first time he had run into that!
