Re: 1969 Burb build-up (Bags, 5.3/4L60E, repaint, interior....)

Anyone notice the white paper outline on the floor? It is/was the build sheet. I couldn't save it and the only thing I can make out on it is the word "FREMONT". This matches the VIN for where the truck was built.

More progress.... Got all floor pieces (rockers/floor/kickpanel) fitted. Now some POR15 to prevent any future rust (hopefully!).

Patch Panel for air box (this was a fun one to make ). I also raised the lower shock mount on my StrongArms. They are the lowest part on the front end and I always seem to drag them. I think I still have enough travel in my shocks, but may have to go with a shorter one.

Re: 1969 Burb build-up (Bags, 5.3/4L60E, repaint, interior....)

Slowly but surely making progress. The key for me has been making a little progress every day. I try to get 4-5 hrs on the weekend and at least 1 hr a night.

I didn't have much rust, but it affected 5 pieces that are all tied together creating a multi-dimensional metal jigsaw puzzle. I haven't kept track of my time, but I'm sure it's taken longer than some of our Pro's on this board. It definitely adds to my respect of some the guys that do this type of work with relative ease. After much "ciphering" I have figured out that the inner rockers are shorter on a truck than a suburban (lengthwise and widthwise). So after spending several hours trying to make the repop work, I finally took Rokcrawln's advice and built my own. Rok, not that I didn't believe you, but I had the repop so I thought I would try. I will build my own from now on.

When I got bored trying to fit the five dimensional metal puzzle together, I ground down most of the welds on the fire wall. Minimal brain power required to do that!

Got everything clamped/screwed together. Remounted the door to check door gaps. I should be able to start welding everything back up tomorrow.

Nice work. I guess I need to get more clamps for my next one (whatever that might be).

Almost there (at least on the passenger side!). Got the floor, inner rocker, kick panel and lower door post welded in. I want to bolt door on and recheck the rocker prior to welding it in.

I'm hoping the learning curve will be easier on the other side. I think there will be less to repair over there. Most of damage on passenger side had to do with leaking windshield and trash in the air box. More pics:

Re: 1969 Burb build-up (Bags, 5.3/4L60E, repaint, interior....)

Thanks for all the encouragement. The last month has been slow go. Kids started back to school, job, work is crazy, I was sick for a week.... . Anyway, here is a little update. I've finally got everything welded up on the pasenger side. I think it came out pretty good for a first timer. I learned a few things that will hopefully make the drivers side a little easier. With the door on, the body lines line up fairly well. I also cut the drivers side rocker off. There is not as much rust on this side , so hopefully it will go a little quicker.

I also got the airbox pieced back together and have most of the firewall welded up and ground smooth.

Here are some pics of the drivers side. There's not as much damage as on the other side. After I cut the rocker off, I did a trial fit with the new one. Hopefully I'll get this wrapped up in the next couple of weeks (assuming we don't have to Hurrevac ). I'm going to replace the rear quarters and the tail light panels next. I think this will be quite a bit easier than floorboard and rockers. We'll see............

Re: 1969 Burb build-up (Bags, 5.3/4L60E, repaint, interior....)

More updates. I started on the drivers side but decided to do it a little bit different than the other side. On the passenger side, I cut out all the rust and then started fitting the pieces back together. This time, as I removed each rusted piece, I prefit the new piece. Hopefully this will allow all the pieces to come together a little quicker. I got all the rust removed and the new pieces cut yesterday. I will start piecing it all back together this week.

Thanks. I can't wait to get done with the rockers/floor boards. This is the hardest part of the rust repair (and the least noticeable). The rest should be fairly easy........... quarters/tail lights/ gas door install.

I'm back in the GAME!!!! After 5 weeks of being on the road, I finally got a little bit accomplished this weekend. I welded in the floor and part of the inner rocker. Hopefully I will get the rest welded in by the end of the week and then I will start on the rear quarter panels.
