Pulling engine & tranny - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My son & I are going to pull the engine & tranny(350/th350) to ready for paint.
Does anyone know what the combo weighs? I don't have a hoist & was going to do it the Gomer Pyle way & put a 4"'x4" over the rafters & use a come along. I have a 1 1/2 ton come along.

I would guesstimate, 600 lbs give or take 50 lbs.

Should handle it no problem (as long as your rafters aren't 10' apart

I'm pretty sure that an all iron SBC weighs in the 600lb range without accessories. Not sure on the trans. and torque converter...100lbs? Are you thinking about laying a 4x4 over the bottom sections(2x4) of trusses or are you dealing with some real 2x12 or TJI's? If it is the truss method, I don't think I would do it. Just my $.02

A TH350 with fluid and converter would probably be closer to 150 I'm thinking.
I would seperate them in the truck, tranny out the bottom, and engine out the top on it's own.
With a come-a-long, you can't move at all, you need to go one of 2 directions... up and down, that's it. When pulling with a tranny attached, you'll never get it done like that.

Drop the tranny out, then pull the engine out second. This way, you can push the truck out from under the engine and drop the engine down onto what ever you'll be putting it on/in.
