question about my hood....

it has the bowtie on it so i'm guessing its from a 69 and it seems kinda flimsy....the middle of it kinda wobbles or bounces up and down. my question or questions are....
is a 69 hood the same as a 72 hood?
what can i weld underneath it to support it to make it more stable?
how do i get that bowtie off without breaking it all to hell?
and
what would be the best way to fill in the holes where the bowtie used to be?

Look under the hood at the top after you open it. You should see holes to remove the nuts off the emblem. Remove those and pull the emblem off. When you go to close the holes or fill them in, then you take something solid and put it on the inside of these holes where you removed the nuts from, example metal tape or glue a small piece of metal over the back of the hole or some fiberglass, Keep in mind the fiberglass will have to harden first. When you have found a suitable hard backing for the holes, then you can close the hood and fill them in with liquid metal products, Lead metal, or Bondo on the outside of the hood. Then you can sand it, primer and paint. I am sure the guys here have other ideals as well.
As for the flemsyness of the hood, You can install the little rubber spacer pieces that are cut in rectangles and you put them between the hood and the braces on the hood underneeth. Sometimes it stiffins things up sometimes it don't. You may still get a loose spot. You can buy these rubber spacers from the board venders or just about anyone selling the 67-72 truck parts. Two different styes of stock hood. 67 68 hoods are the same and the 69-72 are the same. Differences are what kind of emblems are on it. Good luck and I hope that helps.

The best way to fill the holes is by far to weld them up. Any other method you run the rist of getting cracks around the holes at a later date. I know thier are guys that have done this and it is fine right now but keep in mind that when metal gets hot it expands and when cold it contracts Bondo and fiber glass do not do this at the same rate as metal and that is why they will crack over time. If you can get a small piecs of brass behind the hole it will make for easy welding since the brass acts like a spreading board for the meltin metal to flow accross. I like to make small filler pieces to fill any hole over 1/8" but that is just me. As far as the hood being spongy check and see if you have and felt/ruber strips between the hood and the center two braces. If not get some and your problem should go away. Thes were factory installed just for this. Hope this helps!

wow, thank you BOTH very much. great info. i have a mig welder but i've never used it. i just got it so that i can put in some new sheet metal. i just need to get 220 in my garage so that i can use it. what are those spacers called exactly? so that i can look them up. thanks again yall.

I tried many ways to stop the hood from bouncing while driving, but the final cure I came up with was to spray that expending foam in between the suports and the hood. iIt worked great, the hood used to bounce up and down. All the other stuff I tried just moved the bounce to a higher speed.

They are called hood sponge brace pads or Rubber Hood Pad Set 67-72 Hoods , originals were normally held in place with a rubberized adhesive that dries out and becomes brittle as pad slowly decreases in thickness as it breakdowns from heat and vibration and then they fall out. We carry them along with just about every other dealer in these parts.

I like both the other ideals in this post. Welding would do the best. Now for a example on the felt spacers for the underside of the hood. LMC has a good reference parts magazine. If you don't have one, get one just for that purpose. It is very educational. Reference EXTERIOR RUBBER, page 13 for your felt spacers to get an ideal on how they look and where they go. LMC will send you there parts mag. for free. The venders on the board should have the stuff cheaper and in better quility Good luck and hope to see pictures some day.
