Neat fast trick for masking/painting wheels with the tires still on

Go to hardware store and get 10 ft of flashing.
Just wrap it around the wheel. No taping & paper.
Gives a quick and clean job. (Yes I did a little sanding...not much).

This also tests my new Sony digi cam

Good ole trick.Eastwood sells steel for that with plastic clips for the less innovative.I do brake work with aluminum on houses,"wrappin'."
I should start marketing my scrap,it`s heavier than that hardware store coil.

Did you use a spray can or a gun? Nice job either way.

Just do like they do where i work, when they paint the big trucks if they get over spray on the tires no big deal they paint the tires black. looks slick as hell till they drive it and the paint gets all cracked up. You would think when you spend a coulple grand a paint job you want a better one than that.

Great Idea. Last week found flexible masking tape at Lowes in the paint department and used that which was the best way I had found to paint wheels with the tires on until I saw your post.

Re: Neat fast trick for masking/painting wheels with the tires still on

I've got the cheap white "discount tire" steel wheels on my truck and they are showing rust in the usual places. No big bubbles or anything, just sorta bleed through. I really hate to spend too much time/money on them, but I would like to get a shot of paint on there, maybe black... Has anyone tried the "por" stuff on wheels? How much prep would be necessary? Sorry for jacking the thread, but it's pretty related to this project.

Thanks, Tony J.

Haven't used POR-15, but I have used the Dupli-Color wheel paint. It comes in Black, Silver, White, and Gunmetal.
I did my Camaro wheels in Gunmetal.

I have a writeup on CamaroZ28.com in the Wheels & Tires section if you are familiar with the site. I will try and get a link if not. Nice F-Body and Z06 BTW.

Oh, and that's a great idea.
Wish I would have thought of that when doing my wheels. I used a good bit of tape. Didn't have any overspray though...

special-K, my dad does siding and such as well, so I am sure his scrap could be reused...

Re: Neat fast trick for masking/painting wheels with the tires still on

This is just a good "high solids" rattle can paint. Again, looking for quick & easy.
POR will fade from the sun, it shows brush strokes, and wants to run unless you spray it on. Then you have to clean the gun. That kind of defeats the purpose of "quick & easy".

I'll check it out. I've been on that site for 10 years now... lol.

Wow... I just check out your truck pages and holy snikeys, it's nice. You've done a great job with that GMC!

Fantastic idea!
Thanx for sharing.

I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but here's something I do when spray painting: I put a thin coating of bearing grease on the stuff that I don't want the overspray to stick to. When the paint is dry, just wash off the grease.
