Just saying Hi; new truck owner.

As of today I bought a 1967 Chevy C/10 Stepside for the large amount of 200 dollars. It has a straight 6, manual everything, and 3 spd converted to floor shift. Has a few questions to start;

1. Can I use a late 70's HEI 6cyl distributer in this engine? If so what else do I have to change?

2. Is it legal to turn the exhaust out to before the rear wheels? It leaks right around the axle and i dont want to have a whole exhaust put on.

3. What the heck is my shift pattern? It didnt seem to care what gear I started in, but I cant tell which gear is first.

4. What are some catalogs that I should order (must be free)

Thanks, I'll post a picture soon

Welcome from Connecticut! In Ct the exhaust must extend behind cab 18" and if you register the truck as a camper it has to exit past the rear wheels. Engine oil change should take 5 qts with filter.

When you wire up your HEI ignition, you'll need to run a new power wire for the coil. Don't use the power from your old coil, it is only about 6 to 8 volts. Just runa wire from the IGN UNFUSED terminal on your fuse box, and run it to the COIL connection on your cap.
Welcome from Ohio.

It's been a long time, but PA was real stick about modifing vehicle exhausts. I'd check with a local inspoection station before I ran it before the real wheels. Some of the others board members who are still in PA could tell you more than I can though. I know the fines were pretty stiff for violations and I wouldn't want the hassle.

Check first.

Sounds like you've got a similar truck to my 72 C/10. Its got a later model 250 six installed with the 3 on the tree behind it.
Sounds like your shift rods are crossed up. I've never tried starting off in second gear but I guess its possible .

Start off in 2nd? hell i started out in 3rd and the truck didnt seem to care. It needs a tune-up bad, some fool put autolites in... oh about 20 years ago and they are still in there. I just noticed the lack of a harmonic balancer, how do I set the timing on this crazy thing? Oh, and my engine block has the number 282 or 292 on it, does that help to figure out what engine I have?
