Re: 292/700r4 combo?

The 292 should bolt up to the 700R4. I have heard the 200R4 is beefier than the 700R4 and still has an overdrive. But I have the SM 465 4-speed behind my L6. So I'm no expert on turbo-hydramatics. Good luck.

I`m thinking to use a 292 in the`71 shortbed I just got.I may go manual(already a 3spd)with a NV4500.Or,just use a 4spd manual if I decide not to build it for much traveling.I`d like to hear what becomes of your 292/700r4 idea.

Sounds like a great combo for a daily driver, just not sure about towing in overdrive with an inline 6.

Seems like it would always be in third when loaded...dunno.

Re: 292/700r4 combo?

I think it would be a good combo, just make sure you don't have to high of gearing. I prefer at least 3.73 but 4.10 to me would be better. I build mine so you can tow in 4th and if as you say you are not towing to heavy you should be fine. And make sure the cable is (set) right, I use the word set cause there is no adjusting them they are either right or wrong. And don't use a stall convertor, not good for towing. And be sure the lockup is working correctly for long trans life. And a proper size external cooler plumbed in after the radiator is essential as well. Good luck with your decision.

Re: 292/700r4 combo?

For any type of --even somewhat-- towing, you may want to consider a turbo 400 with a gear vendor. Even with my vast years of transmission building, the 700 just doesn't seem up to the task in my suburban. In my 69 GMC 1 ton, I put in a gear vendor. No issues with reliability now.

Does the gear vendor have overdrive?

Re: 292/700r4 combo?

The gear vendor is an overdrive unit (or underdrive depending on how you install it) that mounts in place of the tailshaft on your tranny.

It is a 22% overdrive and allows shifting between gears, thus theoretically 6 forward gears.
