I have a 72 chrome grille shell that has tarnished, I want to paint it the same color as the truck, is there anything I should do other than sand, to make paint stick. I also plan to do the same on chrome door handles and mirrors which are pitted and need sanded. ALL ONE COLOR!! Thanks

You could probably sand blast them to ruff em up?

use a good etching primer so it bonds well to the grill shell.just painting it its most likely going to flake off. i would also sand it pretty good

sand it with a course sand paper and use self etching primer so that it will adhere to it and then paint

Are you sure your grill is chrome and not aoidizied aluminum????? Better make sure....And I would use a 2k epoxy primer instead if the self etch...I am not sure if the "old school" etch primer can be sprayed on aluminun like epoxy.(ppg dplf).....I would LIGHTLY sand blast to roughen up the surface....
Lightly means just enough to dull up the surface....No more....Lightly....
Epoxy sticks to anything.......

An etch wash or primer is not really necessary since corrosion on aluminum is not a HUGE issue (Yes, bare aluminum will oxidize a little but not to the extent that bare steel will..) I would just sand blast it and then use a high build 2k primer and sand with P600 and then base and clear it... Epoxy primer will work well too just lay it down flat b/c it is nasty to sand ...

Etch prime it. I worked for a company for a couple of days that painted aluminum box trucks for oil fields. They acid primed the shell then coated it with single stage nason paint. Looked nice and from what the guy told me that was how they do all the aluminum bodied vehicles. The acid prime is not for corrosian at least in this case it just gives the paint something really good to bond to thanks to the primer etches itself into the metal.

I sanded the grill shell on my '70 C10 with 100 grit sandpaper. I also did a little body work (knocking out dents, dings and bent areas) and used some body filler to smooth everything out. Primed and then painted with Nason bc/cc. Turned out real nice.

All GMC grills are steel.
Sand blast it. That is the best way to get all of the surfaces and edges roughed up, including the back. It removes rust better than sanding, also.
Treat it like bare metal: etch or self-etch.
