If your looking for a quick check st1x10 has it right, if you have a major leak. If your looking to make it ROAD WORTHY and safe, a basic diagnosis is to inspect and evaluate the system from one end to the other and that would be to jack up all four corners and pull all four wheels and drums off (where applicable) and inspect everything from the pedal to all four corners. You could have a rotted steel brake line or a split brake hose which would show up right away or you could have a leaky rear wheel cylinder(s) or master cylinder and that may take weeks/months for the pot to dry up.
