Steering shaft ??????

I'm in the process of gathering info for my 50 panel project before i start cutting. I'm doing the c10 saddle out of an 84 conversion and everything is being done on a very small budget, I'm not a fan of the term rat rod but its that kind of idea using what you have. I have seen a post and an article about this conversion the only thing left out is the steering shaft info. Does the 84 make the bend? Or do you have to fabricate one with aftermarket knuckles and such. Is there any discount stuff, I mean I dont need polished stainless like flaming river sells. I did a search in the suspension category and someone said they paid $270 for their parts, can it be done cheaper? And by cheaper I mean price not quality it still has to be safe. Thanks for any help

Re: Steering shaft ??????

You need 2 u joints. one for the column and one for the box. I used a 1"DD x 3/4" DD for the top and a splined X 3/4" DD for the box. get some 3/4" ground round stock and you can cut the DD part into it. It will cost under $100 to do. If you use more that 2 joints you will need a support bushing or a 3/4" heim joint so the shaft does wobble around.

Get some 3/4" wood dowels from the lumber store and use that as your mock up shafts. Much easier to cut and test the fit and shaft length. Once you get the correct length you can cut the steel shafts to size.

Re: Steering shaft ??????

One thing to do it get the wood dowel and cut it where you think the joints need to go then tape the pieces together about 1 inch apart with duct tape. It will have the flex you need to get around what ever is in the way and that way you don't spend money on extra joints or not order enough parts.
