rear drum removal question

On a 1/2 ton do I remove the rear drum same as front drum? In other words can I just take off the wheel and then pull off the drum with out removing anything else?

Thanks

ya, but you parking brake can't be set so you will have to block the tires to keep it from rolling.

Re: rear drum removal question

Sometimes they rust or stick a little so a little hammer persuasion is sometimes needed to get it to come off the hub.

Re: rear drum removal question

If you still cant get it off, take a flat screw driver and through the backing plate, screw in the adjuster at the bottom of the brake shoes. This will contract the shoes and release the drum. They wear a groove some times and the lip wont let the drum come off.

Excellent advice. I wish I had it when I did mine a year ago. The grooves were all the way into the rivets holding the pads on. Took a LOT of persuasion w/ the BFH to get the drum off.

Re: rear drum removal question

You will usually need 2 screwdrivers, a small one to hold the adjuster away from the star wheel and another one to turn it, the inside side of the the star wheel need to be turned in the down direction to loosen it. However, neither of our older 1/2 ton trucks, 68 and a 70 have a slot in the backing plate to adjust the brakes.

Re: rear drum removal question

My front ones fell off after removing wheels, almost cought a toe. Hopefully the rear ones will be as nice(not holding my breath). Now I know why the PO left two wheel cylinder rebuild kits in the glovebox.
