What headers are you using for your BIG BLOCK?????

Sorry if this question has been run into the ground, but I am in the middle....correction....I am STUCK in the middle of replacing my 350 with a 468 big block. My motor mounts will not let the Hooker Headers nestle in place. On the pass side, I can get away with a little hammering/notching the header to fit in place. The driver side, however, is a different story. I need at least another 1 inch to 1 1/8 inch of clearance. Does anyone make less obtrusive motor mounts, or am I stuck paying out the ying yang for correct or custom headers? I saw a header thread for what seemd to be only small blocks. What headers can I use for my big block? And, yes, for a reasonable price. (read:cheap).

Any and all experiences and advice appreciated.

Jesse

I'm running Doug's Headers (Ceramic Coated) on mine with the big block stands and don't have any issues with clearance problems. I can't get any pictures of it because it is in storage 4500 miles away from me. I got them from Summit Racing and I'm sorry I don't have the part # as that is in the truck also. The techs there can help you out with what you need.

Bishops Trucks, what are "big block stands"?

Also, did you order them specifically for Chevy C10? I notice lots of people saying that they ordered them for a Chevelle or Camaro in order to get them to fit.

Thanks

Re: What headers are you using for your BIG BLOCK?????

You need the stands that hold the motor mounts for a big block. there are 68-71 stands with the old style motor mount or the (72 only BB mounts that use the newer mounts those would be the ones to get but hard to find) 73 and up stands will work but you need to work the mounting holes over a little.
Any of these stands should fix your problem.
I am putting a BB in my 68 and have 73 up stands and I just bought some 68-71 stands but what I really want are 72 only stands but haven't found any yet.
Good luck.

Ohhhhh! You mean the motor mount brackets? At least that's what they are called on Chevy Duty website. And they are indeed listed for 68-71. I already have those on the truck now. What I did, though, was used the same motor mounts that I took off the 1995 350 SB I just removed, and they simply aren't working. Any other ideas of what to try???

THanks

Those look like they give plenty of clearance. Just wish they were cheaper. Anyone have any quick (and cheap...LOL) alternatives???

Thanks again, Prostreet1967!

I'm using these. I tried 2 sets of Hooker headers and neither fit. The Hedmans bolted straight in without a problem.

Re: What headers are you using for your BIG BLOCK?????

Jesse, is your truck 2wd or 4wd? If 2wd, it looks like the ones ratrod67 put up will work. I've yet to hear of any that fit BB 4wd. Anyone heard of any that work?

Jack

I am trying the Hooker Competition headers from Jegs. P/N 520-2454. Again, I may just have th wrong brackets on there. Just got off the phone with a local truck parts supplier that says that eventhough they look almost identical, the brackets for the SB and BB are different. But I still think it's the headers, too, seeing as how the mounting holes seem to be the only difference between SB and BB brackets.

This is totally frustrating!!! This is the ONLY thing keeping me from crusing with my new motor this weekend

Re: What headers are you using for your BIG BLOCK?????

It sounds like you got the BB Stand issue straight. The headers I ordered from Summit were specific to my '71 C10 with a big block.

Mine is 2wd. I may have to spring for the Hedman Headers. Anyone wanna buy some Hooker Competition Headers? Condition: slightly scratched.

Re: What headers are you using for your BIG BLOCK?????

The 68-71 frame brackets for small block and big block are similar but the big block stands have a recessed area that is specifically for exhaust clearance.

BINGO, ratrod67!!!! Man, you are a life saver! I love you guys!! Those are just the pics I needed to see. I was just about to ditch the idea of getting the BB mount brackets because I figured they were gonna basically still interfere. The pics of the BB brackets are clearly different from the ones I have, and the recessed area should give me just the clearance I need.

And the best part is that there is a local place that has them, so no waiting until next week for an order to arrive.

I will keep you all posted!

Thanks
Jesse

Re: What headers are you using for your BIG BLOCK?????

I put a WTB ad on Craigs list and that same day I got an e-mail from a guy that had some BB mounts. I was looking for 72's and that is what he said he had but went to pick them up and they were 68-71 I bought them anyway. Try Craigs list.

I am getting them from Outback Trucks. Haven't checked to see if they have a website or anything, but I have heard their name mentioned plenty times among other local truck guys when I go to meets and other events. The phone number is 281-350-9072.

I think the guy told me $80 per side And I would think that they ship, but you might wanna call....

ratrod67, just so I'm clear. Are you using the BB mount brackets shown in the pics along with your Hedmans? And what about the actual mounts? The ones I got from Autozone look odd. Nothing like the ones I have currently.

Thanks
