Tilt column problem

Howdy,
I am trying to rebuild my '72 tilt column. I want to totally disassemble it but I can't remove the housing support and the thin sheet metal housing which sits just under the steering wheel. I need to get this off to get to the pin(s) that the column tilts on. I have tried and tried but I CANNOT find how it comes apart. I have had it to 2 mechanics and about half of our club members take a crack at it. All they succeded in doing was bending the thin metal housing finish (which I wanted to keep). What's the scoop on this? What's the secret?

You have to carefully work it off. It is not fastened on in any way other than fitting just right. I will find my diagrams and post them.
If you PM me your email address I can email you the diagrams and instructions from teh factory service manual.

I worked mine off with a rubber mallet. It took a long time, but it finally came off.

They make a special tool to pull it off, that is like a steering wheel puller with jaws facing out.
I built my own out of a cheap puller and just sliced some small grooves in the the sides at the end of the bolts so that they would hook on the inside of the housing. I also ran some nuts up to the top to hold the bolts with the slits out against the inside of the housing.
If my explanation was unclear, I could take some pictures and post them.

Welcome to the board from West Michigan!

The cover is just pressed on. I use a small screw driver and small hammer to tap the cover on the bottom edge to drive it off. Soaking the area with penetrant helps. If you are carefull they can be removed without damage.

The manual shows a puller similar to the one that 1933 gasser made.

1933 Gasser - I hope your car/truck is a 1933 and that you are not a 1933 model gasser. I'm a 1942 model gasser myself and that's bad.

i bought 2 disassembled van tilts from another board member just to get that tool. i loaned it to Bill over at vintage chevy truck out here in fremont ca. if you don't get a pic, P.M. me and when i get it back i'll shoot you a pic of it. mine is made from aluminum and the jaws are about 1-1 1/2 inches wide, contoured to fit inside the lip of the tin cover.
