Hey all, have a 292 inline6 in my 69 long bed. Now seeing as I live in somewhat farm country here in abbotsford, there are always old guys sitting on chevy trucks in there back yard. Well I found another 69 longbed in really great condition. Its an auto with a 250 inline6. The engine starts and running perfectly.

Question1: Whats the main difference between the 292 and 250?
Question2: Should I buy the whole truck for $500 and put it back together?
Question3: Should I buy just the motor and tranny and swap it into my truck?
Question4: Tell me how to convince my fiance that I can buy another truck?

You don't see many 250's with autos.........Atleast around me, seems like everyone bought them plain jane and they are 90% of the time 250/3spd units.

What auto is it?

The main difference isthe 292 has a longer stroke and the block is about 3/4" taller. Power steering pump brackets are specific to each.(power steering pumps for a 292 are hard to find and expensive if you do) Distributors , manifolds, valve covers will interchange but the pushrod covers are taller on the 292. The motormounts are offset on the 292 . Both engines are very tough and either would be a good choice.Here's my 292.

I got a 250 in a 3/4 ton 72 K-20............Packing a 4 brl Edelbrock 500 CFM carb, Clifford truck headers, Clifford heated intake and for it being in that heavy truck(It has a way heavier than stock box stake body on it) that little SOB does EVERYTHING I need it to. I got a gooseneck hitch in it, and I am even going to try it out on the trailer when I get a chance just to see what it'll do

IF you have a 292 available go that way, but their is nothing wrong with a 250. I made a comment on the inline board about how I could go places with the 454 that was in the same truck when I bought it and use half a tank of gas...............Go the same places with the 250, and the gage barely moves, even with the huge 4brl on it.

Nope, I am sold on inline power here............

I really liked my 250. Should have left it in the truck. Ran great. If I ever get another truck I'd like to have a 250 with a NV4500 with a 3.73 rear. That would be a great set-up.

I'd buy the whole truck

If you can get the whole truck for $500, go for it. I just had the head done on my 250(new valves and seats, as they were original and didn't like the unleaded gas) and it cost me $225. It would be nice to have a parts truck laying around because you never know what you may need to scrounge off of it.

I used the alt,ps mount off a 250, made a adapter for the bottom alt mount because the 292 block is taller. You can use 292 propane pistons to bump compression, have 1.94 intake valve, and clifford intake/headers. I got a lunita cam in it that specs. out to about the same as a 325 horse/327
I reamed the flywheel bolt holes to fit the 292 bolts.

Question: A friend of mine is switching from a 250 6 cyl to a v8 350. Can he just put a different power steering pump bracket on the 6 cyl pump and use it on the v8?

you can use the pump but i think you have to change mounting brackets and hoses.

I am tempted to put an NV4500 in my K20, but I don't know how it would work out as far as moving around cross members.

I was going to V8 my old 67 and got around some good running 250's and 292's and I think I'm going to keep it an inliner. I had another 67 3 on tree 250 and I really liked it. Made decent mileage with the 250.
Matter of fact last wk I bought a wrecked 66 with a newer 250, ps and a power glide!! I'm going to keep the manual tranny behind it however. It's my spring project.

What size valve does a 292 normally have for intake??

Grab the 292. It is a great engine. Sure, you can get big cubes out of a V8, but the inline engines are soooo smooooth. The 292's have quite a following in some quarters - smooth power.

The 292 also has a huge amount of grunt behind it. Growing up we had a 3-ton grain truck with a 292 in it and you just couldn't stop that motor - even way overloaded on soft fields it just kept grunting along.

LOL, nearly all the C40's and up here had 250's or 292's for power, backed by 4spds and maybe a 2 spd rear swapped in from an IH or bigger GM. Its hard to believe these guys running 400 bu. of grain to the elevator with a 250 or 292 and people say they are "Too Small" for a pickup. I know a guy here who ran a 250 powered C-50 hauling coal up until 2 years ago, he was running 50 some miles one way to the mine with the old truck, he retired, painted it, sold it to an excavator and its STILL going

We got guys that haul corn for us, and they say our M11 Cummins Powered tandem is "Underpowered".............They need to haul the same weight in a GM inlined powered truck, or IH 304 V-8 powered truck before they complain our truck is underpowered!

I often marvel at how they are making diesel pickups now that make more hp than most OTR trucks had up until the late 70's.

Yeah, not a GM, but I love it. 1969 GMC 32,000 - fix, drive, relax, fix... 2019 BMW R1250 GSA - Yahoooooooo 1979 Honda GL 1000 - retro touring at its best. Past: '05 Sierra 4x4 - Had 270,000 KM and running well when it was written-off by a stop sign runner. '94 F-150 from the "F word" company. I'll admit it...good truck. Sold what was left of it for $800 to a guy who came to pick it up at 11:00 PM with cash in hand. Hmm. '79 Sierra Grande (Black) organ donor - perfect rebuildable 4-bolt 350 and a good TH350. '76 Sierra Grande (Orange) - hate isn't too strong a word. Kid who bought it turned it into a hot rod. '68 C-10 R.I.P. - Dad's old truck...too far gone to resurrect. '59 C-50 - with hoist. Truck is gone, wife isn't. Nuff said.
