Buying a truck: 2 options

One is a 69 GMC Long box Arizona truck with ZERO rust, 350 (originally V8 but don't think it's a #'s matching truck) and unknown automatic trans, 12-bolt rear w/posi, single electric fan (pusher, still has mecha fan), newer rims/tires. Has recent paint (two tone white/blue) but has a few dents and scrapes since then. Problems: Slight exhaust leak at header, slight oil leak at front main, wrong air filter assembly, missing front bumper, needs new tail gait as this one looks like it was used to stop baseballs and other random flying objects, doesn't have a working speedometer, needs new battery, no seat belts (94 bench seat 60/40), tint needs removal (purple/pealing), drive door isn't aligned properly, needs new grill, needs hood springs. Can probably get for $2500

Or...

67 GMC long box 350 w/ 3 (originally a 6cyl) on tree and small rear window. Has headers/duals, new carpet, sprayed bed liner, new paint (white enamal), gas tank relocated to rear, newer rims/tires. Only real problem with this truck is a little bit of rust on the floor pans, kick panels and one very small spot on the lower section of one door. Can probably get for $3500

They both have drums all the way around and power nothing and no A/C. Both look like they're sitting on stock suspension (half ton w/ leaf springs)

I prefer the smaller rear window but haven't seen the 67 in person, had my grampa check it out, he said besides the rust it is a very nice truck and needs nothing.

Which do you think is the better buy?

Re: Buying a truck: 2 options

Has to be a long bed, I'm building it for my dad as a getting the F*** out of Northern (Canadian border, rust central) New York present. He is moving south in a few years. He Needs a long bed to fit his Motorcycle in the back (with the gait up) plus whatever else he is going to do with it.

Edit: forgot to mention by the time he gets it it needs to be a standard trans

Re: Buying a truck: 2 options

buy a shortbed and motorcycle trailer...

Question is which look do you like (69 vs 67) and how much work and money do you want to do?

Sounds like the 69 is a bit rigged up (seats, tint, etc..) but if it's 100% rust free (and not bondo) then you are in good shape. However, it's going to cost a pretty penny for the grille ($400+ and tailgate $300+) before you start into the other parts and repaint it then. The 67 is a little ahead except for the rust.

I'd talk the guy down on the 67 if the rust is minor..my 2 cents...

I'd go with the '69 rust-free truck.

Re: Buying a truck: 2 options

I am going with the 69...I do like the LWB.

I do like the stock look. Also...I am not a purist when it comes to these trucks (you know...of a restorative to pure stock). I like some updating with nicer technology. I just love the look of the trucks.

Re: Buying a truck: 2 options

He has a trailer, not all of his bikes will fit on it :-P Besides he does haul a good bit of other stuff besides bikes, his choice, you aren't trying to convince me because I personally like the short box as well.

As for the rust/bondo comment, like I said, besides dents there is nothing that even comes close to looking like rust. No bondo, nothing, it is solid.

Re: Buying a truck: 2 options

Yes, I've had my share of rust and that's what was really turning me away from the 67 even though I liked everything else about it more. I called the guy with the 69 and he said he would def take $2500 for it (originally listed for $5300). Here is a pic of it.

69 looks good, especially at that price. And iI agree for lots of towing/hauling, get a long box.

Re: Buying a truck: 2 options

i had the same situation but a 68 or a 70. i traded my 70 z28 for the 68 and put a 70 nose on it. its been 20 years and i love it. if your not looking to sell buy what you can afford and build what you love.

Yes that's a winch, it's coming off and will probably go on Pa's jeep that he's getting.

Personally I prefer the look and practicality of a long bed, so you are on the right track with that. Since the 69 has no rust and is a long bed I'd go that route. Good luck.

Re: Buying a truck: 2 options

If it's a gift and it will run and it looks good.............Does it really matter if the #'s of the motor match the truck. I don't think it would unless your building a show piece and your planning on reselling it.

Re: Buying a truck: 2 options

Don't the 69-72 GMC trucks have the independent trailing arms in the rear? That could be a plus for a smoother ride. PLus it should already have power steering... the 67 won't unless the PO changed that.

Not too worried about #'s matching, was really just a statement. Anywho, thanks for the welcome.
