Metal Glove Box
A fellow board member (Frizzle Fry) PMd me and asked if I could make a metal glove box without the radio side. More like an original replacement. So here we go...
I made a glove box out of 22g galvanized steel using some measurements from my sample dash. I had to see if it would go in in pieces. I didnt want to assemble it and then it didnt fit. Once it went in I put the ends on and then I seen if it would fit thru the hole, and it did. BUT I dont know if there is enough room to get it in on a truck. My dash is on the bench? Heater box might be in the way.

Re: Metal Glove Box

Re: Metal Glove Box
that is much nicer than how mine came out.
I took the soggy cardboard one out, and unstapled it, traced it out on some thin sheet metal, cut it out and folded it into shape. You'll want to toss a piece of carpet, or something to keep everything from rattling. It'll drive you insane. I used 1/16 inch rubber in mine. |

Re: Metal Glove Box
Now is this metal ok? or would the Aluminum be better? The aluminum would not hold the shine very long and it might be harder to get in? I do have some aluminized 22g at work maby I should make one of those?

Re: Metal Glove Box
I bet Home Depot or whoever would have tons of ideas for a bottom liner. How about that thin black toolbox liner?

Re: Metal Glove Box
I was thinking about using a coating on it too. I just want something solid to mount my Omnifi (mp3 hard-drive) to. Right now it's just sitting in there.

Re: Metal Glove Box
You know, I guess a metal glove box is a nice touch, those cardboard ones are a little cheesy, but the only reason I would go to that trouble is if I was going to put a bowling ball in there or something - don't misunderstand, it's a nice touch, but maybe a tad overkill -?

Re: Metal Glove Box
Good idea, but when the factory ones last for 30+ yrs how long would a 10-15$ repop last?

Re: Metal Glove Box
very cool - I would think if you spray the outside (hidden) with say...undercoating or even wrapped it with dynamat, it would reduce any rattling to about nil and you wouldn't have to line it with anything except maybe some nice epoxy paint... or some of that "splatter of colors" type paint you see under the carpet of the old cars trunks....

Re: Metal Glove Box
It looks good, but I see one big problem. The bottle of Crown Royal is empty!

Looks awesome. As usual.

Re: Metal Glove Box
If it takes a bottle of Crown to make every one, this is going to be very expensive to mass produce... and that's before considering the hangover!

Re: Metal Glove Box
I did the same thing for a customers truck. I welded mine up and painted it black. I was able to fit it under the dash and in. When we get to the point of carpet, I plan on lining the whole glove box with carpet too.

Re: Metal Glove Box
If you can make a metal glove box for a A/C truck I'd buy one. Please send me a message if this ever works. I'm very interested.

Re: Metal Glove Box
I have thought about doing the same thing but it will be notched out for the A/C ducts so about 1/3 of the space will be lost. Nice job!

Re: Metal Glove Box
Now, I've only owned 3 trucks, and 2 of them were pretty well beaten by the time I got them, but my first one was pretty decent... a good 7 or 8 outta 10. However, none of them had good cardboard glove boxes... one was mising, the other two were torn up, sagging, and falling apart. I thought the cost (free scrap) was good, and the time spent on it was good. The only part I didn't like was cutting my finger real bad and bleeding.
