Post Holley vs. Edelbrock....the battle of Carbs?

OK....I have a 350 4-bolt w/94 heads, headers,Weind Tarantula single plane high rise manifold, and a 294 series Comp Cam. My stall speed is a Dragco 2400( I think, I don't have the paperwork with me!). I presently have a Holley dual feed 750 w/Electric choke. I have a wicked driveability problem. It not only drops on it's nose off idle, but also if I am tooling along at around 35 and give her a little to speed up, or after I slow for a turn. I have timing dead on, w/HEI and have already dropped the jets from 72(stock) to 62s. Do you guys suggest giving up on the big "H", and buying a 600 or 650 Edelbrock? I have many friends that keep telling me I'd be a much happier man. Any suggestions????

P.S.--- I also wonder if a dual plane manifold would better handle the fuel for around town driving???

I will never own a Holley carb again..They are a pain. I love my Edelbrock 1406!

I forgot to add that the truck revs clean when sitting still. Of course...it still stumles if you flick it real fast. What cfm is the 1406, and is it manual or electric choke?

I hate Holley carbs. If I buy a new one, it will be the Edelbrock or a Demon.

Installed on 3 weeks ago. The Edelbrock 1406 is a 600CFM with electric choke.

I believe that it mixes air/fuel better, and performs with more power than my QJet 795 CFM.

I have a similar engine set up to yours with the exception of a Edelbrock Performer dual plane manifold.

I would reccomend loosing the Tarantula intake,& going to a perf rpm. The 2 plane intake will help out(tarantula was a highrpm pc,suited to lite vehicles). As far as Holley vs Edelbrock.....if you are racing,Holley is the way to go. IMO ,more tunable,but will requier more hands on to keep in tune. For the street ,the Edelbrock is the way to go. I run a 1407 on my 383,& feel that its more responsive than the 3310 Holley that I took off,but did lose a little upstairs......not a big issue on a street engine.......69 longhorn.

Before spending cash on another carb, try messing with your accarator pump. It sounds like it is giving too much fuel as you tip into it.
All the bug 3 carbs made (Holley,Eldebrock, and Quadrajets) are of high quality, just require seperate trains of thought.
If your carb is still pretty new, or in good shape, have it tuned and see what it does.
For the record, I agree with everyone here on the Ekdebrock, I wouldn't buy a holley or quadrajet. However, if I bought something with one of the others, and it was in good shape, I would hold onto it just becouse I am cheap.

For a driver goto the Edelbrock,or Carter(same thing)think they are both actually made by Weber just different stickers-but i could be wrong.I am one who HATES the Holley carb on a daily driver,ive never had anything but problem,i have a box full of them now.I run the Edelbrock on everything now,basically bolt it on and forget about it,as far as that old intake id swapmeet it best for a light car,a 4speed,and 4.56 gears,get a performer there under $100 most of the time,or everyone at he swapmeets has one i see them from $20-$50 used,but im leary of used aluminum intakes.the 600 cfm Edelbrock is a awesome carb i run it on stock Big Block,the bigger big blocks that have been modified i run 750 edelbrock.I have some of those 3310 Holleys -1 and dash 3,but i doubt ill ever run a 750 or 780 again,but once i had a new Holley it was one of them chrome looking ones a 650 double pumper on a 455 it worked sweet,never had a problem.So if your set on a Holley buy a new one not a $20 swapmeet one.Im about to put some Holley carbs,and a box full of Holley parts on ebay.

I have always had good luck with Holleys but I guess that is personal preference. Is sounds to me that your current holley is too big. 700 should be tops on a 350.they will usually run very nicely with a 650. that will help keep intake velocities up and will help off idle accel. and response very much. you want a smaller carb especially with a high rise manifold because the velocities are way too low by the time it gets through the long runners. whatever one you choose go with a smaller carb and it will help that off idle problem a lot. the worst that a smaller carb can do is limit the top end a little but the difference is usually not noticeable for a street truck.

Yeah most enthusiasts 1st and biggest mistake is to big of a carb,bought a 327 from a guy said it didnt run well,smoked,fouled plugs.ran great for a long time after i took of the 850 Holley,and put on a 600.I run 600 on a stock BB

I use the Performer Intake and the 1406 combo, it's great, that's what I would do if I were you.

don't even get me started on how big a P.O.S. the new Holley 670 street avenger is/was. spent the better part of the last 1.5 months trying to get that P.O.S. to run right. i called Edelbrock, gave them my engine /drivetrain specs, and they said 750 on my healthy 355. we'll see, i'm putting it on today. Holley= glorified dump valve.

1904 Q-Jet vs the 1406?

I got an email from Edelbrock saying either carb would be ok on my 402BB..What say ye board members?

I've eliminated the Holly and have decided to go with the Edelbrock but still not sure which model. The Q Jet is a 795cfm because I want an electric choke and you can't get an electric choke with the 705cfm carb or option #2 is the 1406 which is a 600cfm with electric choke.

Oh by the way it will go on:
402BB, 400 auto, 3:42 gears with an Eaton posi, Performer manifold, mild Comp Cam (262 series), Pertonix II HEI, and Thorley Headers.

Lets vote...
Q-Jet ot 1406...Which is my beeter choice.
I will make a decision by Monday...

Holley's are the greatest, here I go again with the minority opinion on the board. Anyway, longhorn has some good advice, go for a performer rpm, they're great intakes. as far as the street avenger goes, i've sold a bunch at work and have had no returns or complaints, only praise. all of the carb types have their own "personality" and take a diffferent approach to tuning.

Gentlemen-
It sounds as though Edelbrock is the carb of choice!! Actually, when i built the engine I had a buddy swearing by the 750 Holley for my combination. Even though I knew better than to choke a 350 with that much fuel...I reluctantly bought it. As fate would have it, he moved three states away BEFORE He could have the joy of tuning the bastard along with me!! Now i get to explain to my dear wife WHY I need a new carb!! Even though the chrome is still shining on the Holley! Thanks for all the advice. I priced the 1406 today @ $239.00, If the Holley doesn't straighten up real quick, it will end up on the shelf. Expensive bookend!

check into one of the remanafactured 1406's they are 30 or 40 bucks cheaper and have the same warrenty

bigjimz right edelbrock replaces the innards when they are returned for whatever reason.much cheaper same warranty.edelbrock has it by way of carbs hands down.1406 on mine w/matching intake,cam,timing gears.didit over last christmas break,was simply a slap it on and go change .i've not had to dick w/it since,and runs perfectly on a modest 350.

67 blacksheep, definitely swap out the single plane intake for a dual. You will get much better throttle response. The 750cfm you have jetted down that far probably isn't your problem. Accelerator pump still could be a problem as Longhornmaill suggested. As for brand of carb, I've ran them all and Holley requires more attention than all of them. However, for performance, I will take a Holley anyday of the week. Maybe because I can tune them in my sleep, I know how to make them run.

I agree w/ everyone here that the Edelbrock and Carter are the way to go but there is one thing that is kind of bad because Quadrajets are actually pretty good carbs!! Tomorrow, I am going to install a Qjet from a 70 Chev C10 w/350, onto my Truck because my Primary Shaft on my Carter AFB 625cfm, needs new bushings and it is loading up, but I will see how much performance, I am going to lose but I have a feeling since the Qjet has smaller Primary's that it will have better low end and get better gas mileage over the Carter and Edelbrock Carbs, but the Secondaries on this Carb are Huge compared to my Carter!!

Holley's are good carbs untill they mess up and good luck on rebuilding them. Hell even the Street Avenger Carbs, I have heard from quite a few people that these carbs are horrible!! So I am/would avoid any Holley and just stay w/ either Edelbrock, Carter or Qjet!!

Also get rid of that damned Single Plane Manifold and Get a Performer RPM Air Gap Intake !! or Even a Performer Air Gap!! Trust me you will have more Lower End w/ a Dual Plane over a Single Plane Manifold anyday.. I am currently running the 2101 Performer and it is great compared to when I was running my Edelbrock Torker(Single Plane) and I have not lost any Top End but I did gain a lot of Lower End!!

Great thread, I also perfer Edelbrock.

I noticed some discussion on hessitations and such, I have done a lot of work with these carbs and detailed much of this information
