cutting the Dash Yes I"M lower then dog sh-t
I had a clean dash in my 1972 3/4 ton truck and i'm a real big stiggler when it comes to staying factory but
there is one thing i'm not going to settle for less on is my sound system cus i need it i spend to much time in my truck so i'm a PO i cut my dash to put a CD player in and i thought long and hard on running my Duel Nob radio and i bought a used one off ebay what a wast of money then i had a friend of mine have his under his dash and they broke in and damaged the dash and riped it off So no matter how you look at it the old way radio is a thing of the past if you want to spend 400.00 for a radio you can't even enjoy i say NO way i dout that the dual radio is coming back and i dout that they will make a CD player that will have a dual Nob not a winning battle I like to add one other thing if you have a 1947--1970 truck and you Modifid the front end to disc brakes well you have changed the truck the Radio is no big deal soon they may have a part that will replace the cut section out but me I just don't give a dam any more My truck i spent 9500.00 and its made to do one thing work i will beat this truck up for the next 10-15 years like i did my 1965 3/4 ton and i have gone with out CD for 8 years now NO more i want my own tunes so i cut that dam dash so if your saying every one has a choice on cutting the das we do but i dout you live in your truck and work it 40hours a week I'm a true GM buff for the last 25 years i own 15 old trucks and cars and i'm plain tired of people telling me don't cut the dash well my new thing is cutting the dash HA HA HA so there and yes i'm crazy cus it broke my heart when i did it but i have to move on Last edited by stsalvage; 03-19-2007 at 04:31 AM. |

Re: cutting the Dash Yes I"M lower then dog sh-t
I`m having my factory AM/FM made CD/MP3 compatible and just using it to fill the whole and for volume control, basically. That`s one alternative to gain tunes and not cut.I`ve been using AM/FM Cassettes since they first came out.People give me these things all the time. It`s like, since CDs came out, tapes suck. But,I`ve enjoyed them forever, that includes now.
Notice...I have trashed anyone for cutting a dash(or doors)or told anyone what to do with their truck. Guys eliminate wing vents(my opinion?),"shave"drip rails/whatever they can, shorten longbeds, chop tops, smooth firewalls,Hack frames/bed floors/inner fenders/hinges and more to"lay rocker?",weld-in rollpans and cut frame horns to do it. If there were CDs,or even factory stereos, offered on these trucks back then, where would the stereo and speakers go??You got it. It`s nice to have 4wheel disc brakes, electronic o/d,TPI...why not tunes? I still try to get around permanent alterations(or repairable ones),but I like to start with clean original trucks, too.

I agree - your truck - your mods
I'm still on the fence with my project. One way is to keep a nice looking AM stocker in the dash and hide a real head unit someplace like the glovebox. The other is start cutting... |

Re: cutting the Dash Yes I"M lower then dog sh-t
I have 2 with the dash cut. As long as it's done neatly then there shouldn't be a problem with what anyone thinks.
My third one is uncut and is getting the radio delete plate. The 500+ h.p. bigblock is all the music I care to hear when I drive that one.

Just cut it out nice and straight, and save the piece for a patch panel... just in case you want to go back... thats the good thing about metal, you can always put it back

I cut my dash. I figure I cut the rockers, the cab corners, the floor pans, the kick panels, the rad support, etc etc, why not cut two other little pieces of tin

It's your truck - cut it if you wanna. Just save the leftover piece so you can weld it back in later if you want to restore the dash - PROBLEM SOLVED.

Re: cutting the Dash Yes I"M lower then dog sh-t
In the end it comes down to what you want to do. You have obviously thought long and hard about this. I for one hate to see a good dash cut, but I also understand the need to have tunes
But I also think that if you have given it this much thought, you aren't going to just jump in and butcher it if you do decide to cut. That's the difference between you and the 'PO' horror stories I have seen and read. There is a difference between modifying and butchering....no one will ever agree on where that line is drawn, but..... In the end I say it is your truck...do whatever you need to do to get the most enjoyment out of it

Re: cutting the Dash Yes I"M lower then dog sh-t
I'm with Biff,
It's your truck, you paid for it and you drive it so other peoples opinions are not even worth considering. Do what makes you feel good .... just make sure in the end that this is really what you want and that there are no other ways of doing it such as remote controls etc. My dash was hacked by a previous owner and I filled it back in so this is not original but you can not tell unless you get in behind the dash! I've also stumbled across a radio delete plate at the local wrecker. This gives me the size I can allow for a new unit and a plate to put in to make it a radio delete truck if I decide to take out the sound unit. I've done enough mods that this is never going to happen so maybe I'll just save the plate for you. Is that a saw that I hear .... esll.

These trucks are made to drive and enjoy - I thought a lot about cutting mine, and I ended up doing it because I wanted the bootm line is that I enjoy the truck more.

Re: cutting the Dash Yes I"M lower then dog sh-t
Cutting your dash out for a DIN sized radio is a forgivable thing...IF done neatly. I looked at the shaft mount replacement radios and they cant come close to the typical DIN radios that cost HALF the price. Maybe for a highly collectable car where cutting the dash and ruining the vintage look is too much but the owner would like a decent radio/cd changer and the original can be saved and re-installed, then the shaft mount replacements are good, but for the daily driver...they aren't all that great for the money and trouble you have to go through just to listen to a CD.

cut=custom! Its yours do whatever makes you happy. I worked at a stereo shop for a long time. I cut muscle cars, street rods, trucks, etc. Its not really that big of a deal to me.
