1968 396 HP figures?

Does anybody have an idea of how much HP and torque and original 396 in a 1968 GMC half ton would have?

If it is of any help the option code shown in the glove box is L47 396 cu in 4 bbl

Were they more of a truck motor, or did they have power like some of the muscle cars?

Re: 1968 396 HP figures?

the 68 Chevy (Asuming GMC was the same) "High Torque" 4B 396 V8 Was rated for 310HP Gross

400 lb-ft Gross Torque at 3200 RPM

For comparison, The 68 "Turbo-Jet" 396 found in the 68 El Camino rates at 350HP, 415 lb-Ft Torque

It looks to me like the truck engines were tuned for trucks.

The 396/402 in my 70 is rated at 350hp according to a sticker on the radiator support.

Re: 1968 396 HP figures?

What Toms68cst says above. 310 gross HP @ 4800 RPM and 400 Gross torque @ 3200. The NET ratings were: 242 HP @ 4000 RPM and 350 ft.lbs. @ 3000. -Brian
If this helps, click the little balance scale to the left of the "!"
