well i got the whole front lift springs in and the 3/4 dana 44 in and i am trying to put the steering arm on . i got the whole knuckel off the axle becuase i had to put ball joints in . well i went to put the new steering arm on and it wont come off . we heated it with a trouch to try to get the locking cones out and basicly beat the ever living piss out of it . i was wondering if some one had a trick to get the cones or the whole arm off with out damageing the knuckle . i was afarid if i kept doing what i was doing i was going to damage the knuckle

You can take a socket or piece of tubing that is slightly larger than the cone washer and place it on the arm where it will surround the washer but doesn't touch it. Strike downward on to your socket or tubing and the shock will make the washers vibrate out. Yes it's still going to take a large hammer but they should fall right out. My steering arm fell off the truck after a couple sharp raps using this method.

First dig all the crust out from around em so they can come out. I tapped around em with a old screwdriver and tehy came right out. After I realized tehy were there.

they have a slot in em so if you had a dental pick type tool you could probly reach under and pull up on em.

By not having the knuckle on the axle you have lost a lot of leverage on the arm. When it's on the axle you have the wieght of the truck holding the knuckle in place while you hit the arm. Do a search and you'll find pleanty of methods. here's mine: soak the living snot out of the area with the cones with penetrating oil (wd-40, pb blaster or similar). With the knuckle on the axle, hit down on the top side of the curved section of the arm. this acts like the socket over the cones in shocking the cones and vibrating them out. My 30+ year old arm came off in less than 15 minutes this way and it wasn't rust free.

I do the socket/ pipe method as stated earlier. And a BMF hammer. And PB Blaster. The knucke has to be bolted to the axle housing so it is rigid.

I bought the puller that was made to remove them for $6 from harbor fright 3 min and its off.

Don't mean to get too far off topic, but the sell a tool for that?!?!? i thought it was the "old fashioned" way to get you to take it to a shop - LOL!

well i got it off lol . i had to beat the snot out of it with a 10lb hammer for about 20 mins till the little cones fell right out . after that i was done in like 10 mins lol . yeah that they make a tool for that line is some times total b.s .

Just so you guys know they have2 sizes of pullers this one worked on both ends for my power steering set up it will do both the axle and steering box end of the arm but on my 68 non power arm I have to use teh smaller puller on the steering bos side.

I beat the snot outta mine, did the heat, finally resorted to drastic measures and drilled a little of the cone wahers out (bad idea) it put grooves in the studs and arm. I wasn't using either again so I wasn't to upset. If I had drilled down only 1/8" then it would have been better.

I guess I got off lucky....my truck was lifted from the P.O. so when I switched to a different lift kit I didnt have to mess with the steering arm,it was already on from the other lift kit

Sorry Earl, That's a Pitman Arm puller not a steering arm puller. Those do work excellent for their intended purpose but they won't remove a steering arm. The steering arm is the U shaped arm that's bolted to the top of the drivers side steering knuckle with three nuts. If store bought puller exists for this job it has yet to surface. Unless you count the BFH!

oop didnt think of that. I wonder if you could just put a bottle jack on the arm and lift the truck up by the steering arm and use the waight of the truck to get it off. I dont remeber having any trouble when I replaced the one on the 72.
