maybe a silly question but was at a friends today 1 of those diehard chevy truck guys that hates to see anything but the right thing on our trucks well he saw my gas cap and said that just aint gonna go around here its chrome but almost sure it isnt a factory cap. well he has a few old trucks sitting around and he grabs the best shiniest cap out there and said there thats what it needs well it was off a 69 it was to big, so we look at his others which is a 72 both were to big. think i have a after market tank or what?

Well, not sure on your fitment issues, but be sure you get one with a good seal.
Honestly, the best sealing one I had (before my Coolcap) was a big honking ugly locking one.

Trust me, the looks is worth the gas splashing down the bedside.

The 1972 has a evap tank and the cap is different from all of the others. A new cap is about $7, but make sure it is for a 72. They look the same, but the 67-71 cap will not fit in the neck.

actually, 71/72 had the evap deal with the odd ball cap.
