Pics of my oddball lockouts 67 K-20

Here are the pics of the lockouts I've been having problems with, along with the spicer decal on the glovebox, and the option tag...does anyone know how to decode the options? maybe they might shed some light on this subject. I need to figure out what axle I have because the seal for the closed knuckle on the left is leaking and I'd like to replace it. Dad said anytime he ordered U-joints for it, he had to order 1 ton parts, but I was under the impression Chevrolet didn't make a 1 ton 4x4 in 67. I didn't scrape the grease off of it, but it has a 10 bolt cover and still has the differential tag, 4.55 gears in front. This truck is factory, nothing has been changed and to my knowlege, it hasn't been opened up since it was new, and Dad was the 2nd owner of it. It is factory equipped with Detroit lockers in both axles, and even has a decal behind the seat to explain that.

Anyone that knows anything about this animal, help would be appreciated.

Re: Pics of my oddball lockouts 67 K-20

I've got the same hubs on my 72 K-20 chassis. All I know about them is that they were made by spicer. Mine has a Dana 44 axle in the front, which have a 10 bolt cover. I know that Dana and Spicer are the same company. YOu might look on the Dana web site for info.

Heres a site for axle ID http://www.nationwideparts.com/differentials.htm

I disassembled mine recently, There a pretty simple design. I bead blasted mine, they work pretty good but are a little stiff to turn. I bet in the winter you would want to carry a pair of pliers to lock them in.

Re: Pics of my oddball lockouts 67 K-20

Dana 44 'eh? maye parts arent as imposible to find for these diffs as Dad has been leading me to believe. I think I'll take the hub apart again clean the grease off of it and try some gear oil. Good information to have on the site you posted, looks like the bolt pattern is the same on the 44 and the 60, 70, and 80....now I need to go scrape the grease off of the axle and check some numbers. Maybe I'll get lucky and it's got 60's

Thanks for the reply.

I rebuilt my closed knuckle a couple years back. finding the gaskets that go around the "ball knuckle" were a PITA to find, but they are just felt. I actually screwed up and ordered 2 sets... so I've got an extra set at the house if you're interested.

Re: Pics of my oddball lockouts 67 K-20

Buck I believe the pic and the ebay ad I posted will fit your axle. According to all the info I've found you should have this axle. They didn't use the corp 10 bolt until 77 or so, and it was never a closed knuckle.

You should be able to find the model "44" cast into the differantial. Also the production numbers are stamped on the main tube. If you look at the pic they would be right behind the tie rod and about 4" on to the long axle tube just out of the picture, warning they are very small 3/16's. Will also have the date of man.

Heres a link to the Dana site. Once you find the numbers you can go there and decode your axle.

Good luck!

Re: Pics of my oddball lockouts 67 K-20

Same as mine. I have to use a plier to turm mine occasionally. I have had them apart to clean them and reassembled using synthetic Mobil 1 grease. That did make a huge difference.

Re: Pics of my oddball lockouts 67 K-20

Cool, I was starting to think dad was right and I had a rare bird that was impossible to find parts for. I found the productions numbers, but did not scrape the grease off of the differential case. The number were 1 18 7B5 602878 3 now that I've seen some more pics, and have some more information, the hubs posted from ebay look like they would work, same application, different style.

Same hubs here on my 68, I always need a wrench to lock them in.

This is the number you need, dana spicer calls it the bill of material number. According to my dana-spicer catalog, you have an axle from a 1967 K20 (duh!), open differential (your sticker just means you have a No-Spin in the rear, not front, unless your dad installed one), 4.55 gears.

Dang, OLDCHEV beat me to it!

Re: Pics of my oddball lockouts 67 K-20

Thanks for all the great info, The gearing and the lockers have always been my favorite part of this truck, even with a worn out 350 with a burnt exhaust valve, it's still peppy and pulls good, great in the mud, and can do most anythig I ask it too....including getting my 93 K 2500 out of trouble when they are both buried to the axles in the wheat stubble

Re: Pics of my oddball lockouts 67 K-20

I had the same hubs on my 67 K20, they where listed on the build sheet and glove box lable. I junked the axle and sold the hubs to board member Jerry Moss. I also had a Spicer Hubs factory pamplet that I sent along with them. Contact him and see if he still has it. He might make you a copy if you ask nice.
