Transmission Shot???

It's a th400. Ok so last night my tranny feels like it is slipping, I drive it back home and park it. My tranny fluid was a little high and I went to empty some today, but I started the truck first and it wouldn't go into reverse or even neutral. It just stayed in drive. The pointer would be on park and neutral but when gas was applied it would go forward. I flushed about 7 quarts of fluid through while pumping the old fluid out (it was reddish-black). After that I'm still having the same problem, I'm guessing it's time to go shopping for a new tranny? Also should I stick with the Turbo 400? I have 3.07 gears.

Re: Transmission Shot???

After searching some more, it looks like it may be my shift linkage? Anyone have pics of the shifty linkage in park?

Re: Transmission Shot???

check your set screw on the shaft comming down from the firewall. It could be slipping when you try to change gears.

Re: Transmission Shot???

You don't really need to know where it needs to be... Have an assistand who is strong enough to hold the brake pedal, get in while you are under the truck, have them (with the engine off) slowly go through the gears, while you are looking at the linkage on the side of the tranny. Not only should you be able to see the linkage move, but you should hear a definate clink through each selection.
You may still have tranny issues, but making shure the linkage is working is the first step.
Did you chainge the filter on your tranny fluid flush? If not, you may well have just wasted your time and money... the filter may well be clogged.
The fluid being overfilled is a good sign of overheating...was it all foamy too?

Re: Transmission Shot???

The filter is inside the pan, along with a vital part of the shift mechanism
