10 bolt in 77 3/4?

I have a 72 K20 with the original corprate rear. I found a 77 K20 with a 14 bolt that I am going to swap in. The owner says the truck has a 10 bolt with 8-lugs. Does this sound right? I have not seen the truck yet. I was going to just buy both axles but mine has a Dana 44 in it. Should I just leave the 44? The truck is not a rock crawler or something that I beat on, just wondering if it is true there is a 10 bolt w/8-lugs and if I should just leave my 44 in. Thanks.

Don

Yes, 10 bolt front w/8 lug would be a corp. front. And yes I would leave the dana in place. The two are mostley the same except for the carrier, but I would stick with the dana because it is already bolted in. No benefit in changing dana out. Plus the dana is correct equipment for your 72. Just my thoughts.

unless the gears in the 14bolt are different than your current dana... then keep the same gears (10 bolt) or pay someone a few bills to swap yours to match the 14bolt etc...

I agree, strength wise the Dana 44 and Corporate 10 bolt are the same, so there is no reason to swap one for the other except if the Dana's houseing is bent. Although there are lots of aftermarket components for each axle, the Dana 44 does have a few more options in the selectible locker catagory if you choose to ever go such a route. -steve

Re: 10 bolt in 77 3/4?

Thanks for the replies. The 14 bolt and the dana have the same gear ratio but snj8198's post made me remember the dana I have now is from a buddy who had it in his mid 80s burb with 44inch boggers and went over a car when the throttle stuck. Not sure if it is bent, maybe I should just get the 10 bolt also?

Re: 10 bolt in 77 3/4?

IIRC '77 is kind of hit & miss for 10 bolts. '77 was a transition year, some got D44's some got 10 bolts. My diffs came from a '77 and the front was D44. Double check what you are getting.

It sure doesnt hurt to have parts!! Better to have it and not need it than the other way, I always say.
